DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Ruth White (Orono, Maine) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team and senior Kevin Finn (Kennebunk, Maine) of the UNH men's track & field team were named the Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on May 12.
Ruth broke the second school record in as many weeks at the New England Championships, which were held May 10 at UMass, when she won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 16 minutes, 22.78 seconds.
She broke the record of 16:27.63 established by Keely Maguire in 2013.
Ruth raced to the front of the 31-runner field in the opening 200m and remained in front by running her fastest 400m split of 1:16.92. Her next five laps were in the 1:18's to build a seven second lead midway through the race, and she extended the lead to 11 seconds with one mile remaining.
Ruth's winning and record-setting time was nearly 12 seconds faster than the runner-up, who crossed the finish link in 16:34.32.
One week earlier, Ruth broke her own record in the 10,000m with a winning time of 32:57.83 at the America East Championships. That time currently ranks 10th in the NCAA East qualifying and is the 23rd fastest in the nation this year.
The top 48 qualifiers of the East region qualify to compete at the NCAA Championships First Round, which will be held May 28-31 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Kevin, who had won four career relay championships, captured the 1,500m New England title with a personal-best time of 3:49.73 to win his first career individual championship. He also ran the second leg of the 4x800m relay team that placed second in a time of 7:45.09.
The captain ran in Heat 3 of the 1,500m and completed the first 300m in fourth place, and he remained in fourth place with two laps remaining. Kevin surged to the front of the pack with one lap to go and was the only runner in all three heats who ran a sub-58 second last lap of 56.67 to pull away from teammate Aidan Shea for the win. There were a total of 27 runners in the three heats.
In the 4x800m relay, Kevin received the baton in first place and extended UNH's lead by running both the fastest 400m and 800m splits by a Wildcat in 54.34 seconds and 1:53.55, respectively.
