Men’s Hockey Falls to UMass Lowell

Jacob Newcombe scores first collegiate goal
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward Jacob Newcombe (Sambro, Nova Scotia) scored his first collegiate goal, but the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team fell to UMass Lowell, 6-1, on Saturday evening in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex. The Wildcats split the two-game series as UNH won 2-0 on Friday in Lowell.
The Wildcats fall to 4-5-0 (2-3-0 Hockey East), while the River Hawks advance to 5-5-0 (3-3-0 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 4:25 of the first period, Jak Vaarwerk fired a one-timer off a pass from Mirko Buttazzoni on the power play to put the River Hawks in the lead. Nate Misskey was also credited with an assist on the play.
- UMass Lowell took a 2-0 lead at 9:41 when Dalyn Wakely tucked the puck in the net on a wrap-around.
- At 10:57 of the first period, Dillan Bentley extended the River Hawks lead 3-0 on the power play when he found the back of the net off a rebound. Jay Ahearn and Wakely were each credited with an assist on the goal.
- At 9:46 of the second period, Newcombe put the 'Cats on the board when he buried a rebound, assisted by senior captain Morgan Winters (Osprey, Fla.) and senior forward Cy LeClerc (Brentwood, N.H.). This was Newcombe's first collegiate goal.
- UMass Lowell extended its lead to 4-1 when Libor Nemec scored a shorthanded goal at 17:42 of the second period.
- Jay Ahearn took the River Hawks to a 5-1 lead when he fired a shot into the net off a pass from Luke Shipley at 3:17 of the third period.
- Josh Mori sent a pass over to Jaiden Moriello who blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net and gave the River Hawks a 6-1 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UNH outshot UML, 27-22.
- The 'Cats went 1-5 on the man-advantage and the River Hawks went 2-5.
