Wildcats Sweep UAlbany 3-0 in First Conference Match of Season

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team swept UAlbany 3-0 on Sunday in the first conference match the season.
The set scores were 25-15, 26-24, 25-22.
Senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) led UNH's attack with nine kills and 10.5 points. Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) was next up with eight kills and nine points. UNH used two primary setters as sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led the 'Cats with 21 assists and freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif) recorded 11. Junior libero Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn) led the team with 11 digs.

SET 1
- The Wildcats scored the first two points of the match as graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) knocked down a kill and a block. Karabulut assisted on the block.
- UNH maintained the lead until UAlbany tied it at six. Graduate student outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) tallied a kill to retake the lead but the Great Danes tied the match back up at seven, eight, nine, and 10.
- The Wildcats accelerated ahead with eight straight points to take a commanding 17-10 lead.
- Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) played a major factor in this with two kills and two blocks.
- UNH never gave up their lead and won set one 25-15 with a Hohnbaum kill.
- Set two was a battle and UAlbany took the lead early with a 5-2 start.
- UNH fought hard to tie it up at nine with kills by Grier, Karabulut, and Kaufmann. Senior right-side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) and Kaufmann also recorded a block.
- The set tied up at 10, 11, and 13 before UAlbany took a three-point lead (17-13).
- A kill from Grier sparked a 7-2 run from the 'Cats with kills from Serbousek, Armer, and Kaufmann (21-19).
- UAlbany tied the score at 24 but UNH remained strong and scored the final two points to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match. Singleton won the set for the 'Cats with an ace.
- The Wildcats never trailed in the third set. They began up 4-0 with a Karabulut kill among three errors by the Great Danes.
- UNH went up 14-6 with five consecutive points consisting of kills from Armer and Hohnbaum, a block from Kaufmann and Hohnbaum, and an ace from Shattles.
- UAlbany scored six consecutive points to bring the score to two points but the 'Cats pulled ahead once again with a kill from LePore and an ace from Singleton.
- The Great Danes tied the score at 22 but kills from Kaufmann and Karabulut along with a Serbousek ace sealed the deal for the Wildcats to give them a 3-0 sweep.
