Wildcats Defeat Brown 3-1 in the Final Match of the Holly Young Invitational

Ellery Singleton Ties Career High Three Aces
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team defeated Brown 3-1 on Saturday in their final match of the Holly Young Invitational.
The set scores were 25-13, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18.
Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind) led UNH's attack with 12 kills and 14 points. Graduate Student outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) was next up with 11 kills and 12 points. UNH used two primary setters as sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led the 'Cats with 29 assists and freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif). Shattles also led the team with 17 digs.

SET 1
- The match began with an over-one-minute-long rally that ended in a Serbousek kill.
- UNH took that electrifying first rally and ran with it as they went on an 11-4 run.
- Hohnbaum, Serbousek, senior right-side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.), senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey), and sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) all recorded kills in that sequence.
- The 'Cats remained strong with a 7-4 run that included two kills from Serbousek, and one from raduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.), Armer, Karabulut, and Hohnbaum. (21-8)
- Two kills from Hohnbaum and one from Karabulut secured set one for the Wildcats (25-13).
- UNH never trailed or tied throughout set one.
- Brown began set two with more intensity as they took a 4-3 lead. UNH responded with a kill from Grier and an ace from Karabulut to take the lead at 7-6.
- Serbousek continued her success with back-to-back powerful kills to give the 'cats a three-point lead.
- A Kaufmann kill followed up a 36-second-long rally to force a Brown timeout. UNH scored two points out of the timeout. The first was a block by Kaufmann and Serbousek and the second was a Kaufmann kill (14-10).
- Brown tried to fight back but UNH held strong with a block from Grier and Armer and a kill from Grier to make the score 18-11 and force another time-out by the Bears.
- Singleton tallied three aces after the timeout and Karabulut and Armer knocked down kills to set up set point.
- The crowd got on their feet and Armer recorded another kill to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the match (25-16).
- Shattles started set three off with an ace. Brown took a commanding 5-2 lead from there.
- UNH worked back to tie the score at 5 with a kill from Karabulut and a block from Grier and Hohnbaum.
- UNH tied the score at nine, 10, and 12 but finally took their first lead since 1-0 after a Hohnbaum kill.
- The score once again tied at 13, 14, and 18. Karabulut and Grier had kills throughout those rallies. Brown would not go away as they forced UNH to call a time-out at 21-19.
- Serbousek blasted a kill right out of the timeout and Hohnbaum followed that up with one of her own. Junior libero/defensive specialist Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn) then electrified the crowd with a timeout forcing ace to tie the score at 22.
- LePore knocked down another ace after the timeout but the 'Cats could not complete their comeback as Brown won set three 25-23.
- A 47-second rally ended in a Hohnbaum kill to get set four started. She went on to rocket two more kills to put the 'Cats up 3-1.
- Grier, Hohnbaum, and Serbousek recorded kills as the Wildcats maintained their lead to 12-8.
- UNH had three straight kills by Hohnbaum, Karabulut, and Grier to put the 'Cats up 15-9.
- The 'Cats went on a 7-2 run with two kills from Armer and one from Serbousek to go up 22-14.
- Brown countered with a 4-2 run but not before an error sealed the deal to give the
