Wildcats Fall to UConn 3-1 in the Opening Match of the Holly Young Invitational

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell 3-1 to UConn on Thursday in the opener of the Holly Young Invitation.
The set scores were 22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 19-25.
Senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) led UNH's attack with 10 kills for 13 points, she also recorded a team-high 13 digs. Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) was right there with her 11 kills and 13 points. Sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) recorded 30 assists.

SET 1
- The Wildcats home opener's first set was a battle. There were six ties by the time the score got knotted at eight.
- Hohnbaum got the scoring started for the 'Cats with a kill. UNH flew in front of the Huskies with three kills. (Two from Karabulut and Hohnbaum's second).
- A kill and block from Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) and senior captain hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) pushed UNH in front to an 8-6 lead. UConn followed that up with a 6-1 run that put the Wildcats down 12-9.
- UNH bounced back with five consecutive points consisting of two kills from Hohnbaum and an ace from Serbousek (16-13).
- The Huskies took control for the remainder of the set going on a 12-6 run to win set one 25-22.
SET 2
- UNH began set two on a 9-5 run. Graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.), Hohnbaum, Karabulut, and Serbousek recorded kills. Singleton recorded an ace.
- UConn responded with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 11. They took the lead and did not give it up for the remainder of the set.
- Kriendler recorded two kills and Hohnbaum recorded one in the remainder of the set.
- The Huskies took a 2-0 lead after winning set two 25-21.
SET 3
- UConn came out hot in set three with three consecutive points. The 'Cats shut down their momentum quickly with three points of their own Serbousek and Karabulut kills.
- Hohnbaum followed that up with two kills to go up 5-4. The lead changed seven times and the score tied 15 times for the remainder of the set.
- UNH was able to stick with UConn the entire set as they went down a maximum of four points but fought back every time.
- The 'Cats trailed 24-23 but flipped the script with three consecutive points finished with an authoritative kill from Grier. UNH won the set 26-24 to go down 2-1 in the match.
Set 4
- UNH began the set with a 4-1 lead thanks to kills from Kaufmann and Hohnbaum.
- UConn took a lead soon after and never gave it up to win the match 3-1 with a set four score of 25-19.
- Kaufmann recorded five kills and a block during the final set.
