Wildcats Fall to Temple 3-2 in the Final Match of the Texas A&M Invitational

Kaufmann Tallies Season-High 14 Kills and 18.5 Points
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell 3-2 to Temple on Sunday in the final match of the Texas A&M Invitation.
The set scores were 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12.
Graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) led UNH's attack with a season-high 14 kills for 18.5 points, she also recorded a team-high nine blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) was next up with 10 kills and 15 points. UNH used two primary setters as Sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) recorded 32 assists and Freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) had 13. Junior libero/defensive specialist Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) led the Wildcats with a season-high 26 digs.

SET 1
- The beginning of the set was all Wildcats as they began with a 9-2 lead.
- Serbousek recorded two aces, Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a kill and a block, Kaufmann recorded a kill and three blocks, and senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) recorded two blocks.
- UNH continued its momentum with kills from Grier and senior captain Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) to put UNH up 14-6 going into a Temple timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the 'Cats took a 14-point lead with blocks and kills from Armer, Kaufmann, and Hohnbaum.
- UNH never gave up their lead and won the set 25-15 with an Armer kill to go up 1-0 in the match.
SET 2
- Kaufmann began the second set with two kills but not before Temple went out to a 7-3 run to force a UNH timeout.
- Grier knocked down a kill right out of the timeout to trim the deficit to three. The 'Cats kept it within three to 11-8 but Temple scored five straight points to go up 16-8.
- UNH responded with a 6-1 run to bring the deficit to 17-14 with back-to-back blocks from Hohnbaum and Grier.
- UNH's efforts were not enough however as Temple remained strong with a 25-20 win to tie up the match at one.
- Grier recorded an ace, and Kaufmann and Armer tallied a kill.
SET 3
- The 'Cats never tied or took a lead in set three.
- Temple began set three up 5-2 and UNH responded by trimming the deficit to 6-5 but that was as close as the score got for the remainder of the set.
- Kaufmann had three kills and Grier and Armer both had two.
- Temple won the second set 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4
- Unlike the first three sets, the fourth had nine ties and five lead changes.
- Temple started on a 5-2 run but UNH responded and tied it up at five with a kill from Serbousek and an ace from Singleton.
- The score tied at six and seven before Temple broke away with three unanswered points to go up 10-7.
- Kills from Armer, Kaufmann, and Hohnbaum left the Wildcats down 12-10 before the Owls accelerated again to go up 15-11.
- UNH pitched six straight points with kills from Grier, Senior captain Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio), and Armer. Purcell and Grier also recorded a block to take the 'Cats first lead of the set (17-15).
- Temple responded with a 6-3 run to retake the lead at 22-20. But UNH remained strong with a 5-1 run of their own made up of kills and blocks from Hohnbaum and Kaufmann. The Wildcats tied the match at two with a 25-23 score.
- The Wildcats battled early in the third set and were tied at eight.
- Serbousek recorded an ace and two kills, Grove, Kaufmann, and Grier also tallied a kill.
- UNH exploded ahead with four straight points. Kaufmann had back to back kills, Serbousek follwed it up with a kill, then Armer and Kaufmann tallied a block.
- Temple scored six straight points to seal the deal on the match and win 15-12.
