UNH Takes Down Louisiana 3-0 in First Match of Texas A&M Invitational

'Cats Record Third 3-0 Sweep of the Season
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team recorded their third 3-0 sweep of the season in the Texas A&M Invitational opener vs. Louisiana on Friday.
The set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 26-24.
Senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) led UNH's attack with nine kills for 10 points, she also recorded 17 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) was up there with her with nine kills and 11.5 points on a .308 hitting percentage. UNH used two primary setters as sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished with a team-high 19 assists and freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.) had 14. Junior libero/defensive specialist Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) recorded a team-high 19 digs.

SET 1
- Set one consisted of nine ties and three lead changes.
- The Wildcats pulled ahead early with a 4-3 lead thanks to two kills from junior rightside hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.), a kill from Grier, and an ace from LePore.
- Louisiana took the lead from there as they went on a 5-1 run. The 'Cats scored three consecutive points after trailing the Ragin' Cajuns 11-7.
- A service and attack error from Louisiana and a graduate student captain Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) kill.
- Kills from Shattles, Karabulut, and Serbousek gave UNH their first lead since 4-3 (14-13).
- The Ragin' Cajuns tied the score up four times in the remainder of the match but never managed to take the lead.
- Serbousek recorded three kills, and Karabulut and senior captain Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded one.
- The 'Cats won set one 25-22 after a block from Grier and Karabulut.
SET 2
- Set two stepped up the intensity as there were 14 ties and six lead changes.
- The 'Cats came firing out of the gates with kills from Kaufmann and Hohnbaum to give them a quick 2-0 lead.
- Louisiana clapped back with three straight points on a 4-2 run to tie the score at four.
- Hohnbaum recorded another kill.
- The Ragin' Cajuns scored three straight points but the 'Cats responded with three straight points of their own. Kills from Hohnbaum and Karabulut along with an attack error from Louisiana made up that 3-0 run.
- After being tied at seven the teams traded points and knotted the score 10 more times until UNH went on a 5-0 run to win the set.
- The 'Cats five consecutive points began at 21-20 with a kill from Kaufmann. Serbousek spiked down the final kill of the second set to put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the match (25-20).
SET 3
- Up 2-0 in the match, UNH began the third set with authority on a 8-4 lead.
- Hohnbaum and Kaufmann recorded a block to earn the 'Cats first points of the set. Karabulut recorded two kills. Hohnbaum recorded a kill and two blocks. Grier tallied two blocks as well.
- Louisiana brought the score closer on a 5-2 run to make the score 10-9.
- The Wildcats had one more point bringing the score to to 13-10 before the Ragin' Cajuns put six unanswered points to take a 16-13 lead.
- Grier finally got the 'Cats on the board again and sparked a run that tied the set at 20.
- The Wildcats took their first lead since 13-12 at 22-21 with a block from Hohnbaum and Grier.
- UNH has the Ragin' Cajuns on the ropes but they fought back to tie it up at 24. A kill from Grier and an attack error put the match to bed as UNH won set three 26-24.

- UNH finished their match vs. Louisiana with the edge in hitting percentage (.125 to .071), kills (41-38) and digs (75-71).
