'Cats Suffer Hard-Fought Loss to Highlanders

NEWARK, N.J. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell in a hard-fought game against the NJIT Highlanders on Thursday, Feb. 22.

FIRST QUARTER:
- Senior guard Bella Stuart (Clifton Park, N.Y.) kicked the game off scoring off of a nice dish from junior guard Clara Gomez (Barcelona, Spain)
- The Highlanders went up by four early in the quarter with not much scoring taking place during the mid-point of the quarter.
- Gomez jump-started the 'Cats offense with a quick layup. The Wildcats then proceeded to go on a 8-0 run resulting in a three-point lead for UNH.
- NJIT regained their footing towards the end of the quarter going on a 5-0 run.
- The Wildcats struggled with shooting at in the opening minutes of the second quarter going just 1-7 from the field. NJIT continued the momentum going on a 9-2 run,
- Adara Groman (Scituate, Mass.) ended the drought by scoring a shot at the free-throw line.
- The Wildcats were able to score a few more points in the quarter but were unable to get a run together, going into halftime down 11 points.
- NJIT began the second half by scoring six unanswered points. However, freshman Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) put a stop to the run by scoring her first three of the game.
- The Highlanders led by as much as 18 points with just over five minutes remaining in the third.
- The 'Cats came storming back in the final minutes of the quarter cutting the NJIT lead to just seven.
- Both teams entered into foul trouble early in the fourth quarter, NJIT scored a three early in the second to extend the lead back to double-digits.
- Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) got to the line scoring one to bring the Highlander lead back down to single digits.
- Breezie Williams (Canton, Ohio) scored back-to-back to make it just a two-possession game.
- Both teams continued to battle, UNH managed to cut it to within two. However, an unlucky call from the refs resulted in four straight free throws for the Highlanders along with possession after the shots.
- This was enough of the momentum shift for UNH to be unable to battle back in the remaining two minutes of the contest.
- UNH led in fast break points, 9-2.
