UNH Falls to UMBC 3-2 Sunday Afternoon

BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to UMBC 3-2 on Sunday.
The set scores were 16-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-16, and 12-15
Senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) led UNH's attack with 17 kills and 18.5 points. Graduate Student outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) was next up with 14 kills and 15 points. UNH used two primary setters as freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif) led the 'Cats with 24 assists and sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) recorded 23. Karabulut and Serbousek led the team with 18 digs a piece.

HOW IT HAPPENEDSET 1
- UNH got off to a fast start after going up 4-1. Graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) notched two kills, and Serbousek and Karabulut each had one.
- The Wildcats kept their lead until the score tied at 10. They never regained the lead as the Retrievers flipped the script with a 25-16 set score.
- Serbousek tallied a kill in the process.
- The Wildcats again started the set strong with another 4-1 lead. Serbousek and Kaufmann recorded a block to give the 'Cats their first point.
- UMBC battled back to tie the match at six but UNH jumped ahead with three straight points including a senior right-side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) kill, a Karabulut ace, and a Serbousek kill.
- The set tied at 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, and 20 before the Retrievers surged ahead and won the set 25-23.
- Kills from Kaufmann and Serbousek sparked a dominant set for the Wildcats.
- UNH went up by as much as 13 points (25-12).
- Shattles ended the set with an ace to prevent a 3-0 sweep from UMBC.
- The Wildcats once again controlled the set as they did not trail following their 8-7 lead.
- Serbousek and Karabulut recorded five kills a piece, and sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) had three.
- Kaufmann iced the set with a kill to tie the match up at two (25-16).
- UNH was unable to complete their comeback as they fell short 15-12 in the final set.
UNH NOTEBOOK- Serbousek is 63 kills away from 1,000.
- Kaufmann is 62 points away from 1,000.
