UNH Volleyball Falls to Bryant 3-2 Friday Night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Bryant 3-2 on Friday.
The set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 12-15.
Graduate Student outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) led UNH's attack with 18 kills and 20.5 points. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) was next up with 12 kills and 15.5 points. UNH used two primary setters as sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led the 'Cats with 26 assists and freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif) recorded 21. Senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) led the team with 14 digs.

- The Wildcats return to Lundholm Gymnasium on Sunday, Oct. 13 (1 p.m.) when they host Binghamton.
- A kill by Serbousek got things going for the Wildcats as they put up the first point of the match.
- Bryant jumped in front 6-4 but not before Serbousek tallied back-to-back kills to knot the score at six. Grier recorded an ace to give the 'Cats the lead back (8-6 due to Bryant error).
- UNH went on a 6-4 run to take a 14-10 lead. Shattles picked up an ace along with kills by Serbousek and Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind).
- The Bulldogs brought the deficit to three points but would not get any closer as the 'Cats remained strong. A Hohnbaum kill put the cap on set one to give UNH a 25-18 win.
- Set two began with a back-and-forth battle consisting of six ties up until Serbousek and Shattles broke it loose for the 'Cats.
- Serbousek kill and two Shattles aces (9-6).
- The 'Cats went on a 9-6 run to take a six-point lead.
- Kills by Hohnbaum and Grier along with an ace from Junior libero/defensive specialist Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn).
- The Wildcats ran away from there as Bryant was unable to bring the score within four points for the remainder of the set. A Grier kill gave UNH a 2-0 lead in the match (25-20).
- Bryant flipped the script to begin set three after going up 12-6. Kills by Serbousek and Graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) along with a block from Hohnbaum and Kaufmann kept the 'Cats in play at 15-10.
- The Wildcats roared back after trailing by as many as six points with an electrifying 11-6 run to tie the score at 21.
- UNH took a 23-22 point lead but were unable to complete the exciting comeback as Bryant scored three unanswered points to take set number three.
- This is the first set the Wildcats have lost since their 3-1 win over Merrimack on Sept. 24, 2024.
- After a close loss in set three, the Wildcats came out firing with a 5-2 lead. Serbousek recorded an ace and Karabulut and Hohnbaum recorded kills.
- Bryant tied it up with three straight points at five. The score tied at six, seven, and eight before the Bulldogs took a two-point lead at 10-8.
- Five straight points from UNH put them back out in front 13-10 and forced a Bryant timeout. Serbousek tallied two kills, Hohnbaum tallied one, and Shattles recorded an ace. (error by Bryant).
- Out of the timeout, the 'Cats continued their momentum by going on a 4-3 run to go up 17-13.
- The score tied at 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 but the Bulldogs tied the match at two.
- Set five of this back-and-forth match began tied at three. A Hohnbaum kill gave the 'Cats their first lead of the set.
- The score tied at four, five, six, and seven before UNH took their first multi-point lead of the set thanks to a kill from Kaufmann and an error from Bryant.
- Bryant tied the score at nine but UNH responded with a Karabulut kill and another error from the Bulldogs to go up 11-9.
- The Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to win the match 3-2.
