Hohnbaum's 11 Kills Carries UNH Past Radford, 3-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a match-high 11 kills to propel the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to Saturday afternoon's 3-0 win against Radford University in Day 2 of the Indiana Invitational at Wilkinson Hall. The set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
Hohnbaum matched her career high of 11 kills on a personal-best .786 hitting percentage as she did not commit an error on 14 attempts. She also matched her career high of three blocks with three block assists.
Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) was next with nine kills. Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led all players in both assists (18) and service aces (four), while Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) finished with a match-high 17 digs. Camryn Honn (Overland Park, Kan.) was credited with 13 assists.
UNH finished the tourney with a 2-1 record. Radford is now 0-2.

SET 1
- Radford won the first three points and raced out to an 8-1 lead.
- UNH inched within 8-4 behind a pair of Highlanders' errors and a service ace by Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.).
- Consecutive kills by Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) and Serbousek were followed by a Shattles ace to lift the Wildcats within 9-7.
- The teams exchanged points to advance the score to 14-11 in favor of Radford.
- Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded back-to-back kills to propel a 3-0 run that tied the score, 14-14.
- UNH took its first lead of the set, 17-16, on a Radford attack error and then another service ace by Shattles gave the Wildcats an 18-16 advantage.
- Following a Highlanders' timeout, Serbousek's kill pushed UNH's lead to 19-16.
- Consecutive kills by Hohnbaum and Kaufmann gave the 'Cats a 22-17 advantage.
- UNH advanced within set point, 24-18, on Hohnbaum's kill and her combined block with Kriendler, then closed out Set 1 with another Hohnbaum kill, her fifth of the set.
SET 2
- Wright's kill and solo block capped UNH's 5-0 run that gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.
- After Radford rallied to tie the score, 7-7, a kill by Serbousek sparked a 4-0 run that put New Hampshire back in front, 11-7. The spurt also included a combined block by Hohnbaum and Kaufmann, kill by Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) and kill by Hohnbaum.
- Radford closed within 15-14, but then a Highlanders' error and Hohnbaum kill extended UNH's cushion to 17-14.
- A 3-1 spurt by the Wildcats – highlighted by two more Hohnbaum kills – advanced the score to 20-15 and prompted Radford to call its second timeout of the set.
- Out of that break, Hohnbaum combined with Kaufmann for a block, but then the Highlanders won four consecutive points to trim the deficit to 21-19 to induce a UNH timeout.
- The 'Cats won the next two points to reestablish a four-point advantage, 23-19, and the teams exchanged points the rest of the set as UNH took a 2-0 lead in the match on the first kill of the day by Lindsay Kriendler (Houston, Texas).
SET 3
- New Hampshire carried momentum into the third set and built a 5-0 lead.
- Serbousek's kill gave the Wildcats a 9-3 lead and then Kaufmann combined with Hohnbaum for another block to advance the score to 11-3.
- Back-to-back service aces by Shattles extended the advantage to 14-3.
- The first kill of the match by Gabby Smith (Carmel, Ind.) capped the 10-0 run that gave the 'Cats an 18-3 lead.
- Radford went on a 14-4 run to close within 22-17, but then Armer and Serbousek had kills to give UNH match point at 24-18.
- The Highlanders extended the set to 24-20 but then succumbed on an attack error.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH finished with the edge in hitting percentage (.261 to .156), kills (41-31) and aces (7-6).
- Both teams recorded five blocks.
- Radford had the slimmest of advantages in digs, 43-42.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Karabulut had a highly-efficient day with five kills and no errors for a .714 hitting percentage; she also had seven digs and a service ace.
- Serbousek finished the tournament with a team-high 24 kills. Hohnbaum and Armer finished with 22 apiece.
- Kaufmann tallied 12 blocks in the three tourney matches for an average of 1.20 per set.
- LePore averaged 5.80 digs per set at the Indiana Invitational with 58 digs in 10 sets.
