UNH Splits Opening-Day Matches at Indiana Invitational

Wildcats Win Opener vs. Southern Indiana, 3-1, Then Falls to Indiana, 3-0
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team split its first two matches of the season in Friday's opening day of the Indiana Invitational. UNH defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 3-1, in the matinee and then fell 3-0 to host Indiana University in the nightcap.
The set scores vs. Southern Indiana were 25-19, 27-25, 20-25, 25-21. IU won 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.
In the opener, Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) led UNH's attack with 14 kills for 14 points. Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) was next with nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage; she also had six block assists. UNH used two primary setters as Camryn Honn (Overland Park, Kan.) finished with a team-high 21 assists and Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) had 18. Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) anchored the back row with 30 digs.
Later against Indiana, Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) led the way with seven kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) was next with four kills. Honn recorded 11 of the team's 19 assists. LePore once again led the 'Cats in digs with 11.

vs. SOUTHERN INDIANA
SET 1
- New Hampshire never trailed in the first set after winning the first three points of the match.
- The Wildcats extended the lead to 8-2 on Serbousek's third kill but the Screaming Eagles rallied to tie the score at 10.
- UNH won the next three points as part of a 6-1 run that gave the 'Cats a 16-11 lead.
- USI closed within three points three times. After the Screaming Eagles made it 20-17, kills by Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) and Hohnbaum pushed the margin to 22-17.
- Kaufmann's fifth kill ended the set, 25-19.
SET 2
- There were seven ties and two lead changes in a set that ended 27-25 in UNH's favor.
- The Wildcats built a 7-3 advantage before USI rallied to take a 10-8 lead.
- The designated visitors remained in front until UNH knotted the score, 15-15, on a kill by Serbousek.
- USI surged back in front, 18-15, and inched ahead to within two points of tying the match at one set apiece, 23-19.
- UNH responded with a 5-0 run, fueled by a pair of Serbousek kills, to earn game point at 24-23.
- The 'Cats converted their third game point on Serbousek's kill to take the set 27-25 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3
- New Hampshire led by as many as five points, 15-10, but the Screaming Eagles went on a 12-3 run to surge ahead, 22-18, en route to a final of 25-20
SET 4
- With the score tied at 5, UNH won three consecutive points and Southern Indiana never got closer than two points the rest of the set.
- The Screaming Eagles did not trail by more than four points, however, until a kill by Serbousek gave the 'Cats a 22-17 lead.
- USI trimmed the deficit to 23-21 but back-to-back kills by Serbousek and Hohnbaum closed out the set and match.
vs. INDIANA
SET 1
- UNH won the opening point on a kill by Karabulut and the Wildcats tied the score at 2-2 and 8-8.
- Indiana won the next four points and the score advanced to 16-12 in favor of the Hoosiers.
- The 'Cats went on a 3-0 run, however, to close withing 16-15.
- Leading 19-17, IU won five consecutive points.
- UNH fended off three set points but succumbed, 25-20.
SET 2
- Kills by Armer and Karabulut helped UNH build a 3-0 advantage.
- Indiana went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 6-4 lead that was never relinquished.
- The Hoosiers extended the advantage to eight points, 16-8, before the Wildcats rallied.
- Armer recorded three kills during a 9-3 run that trimmed the deficit to 20-17.
- The home team responded with a 4-0 run to advance to game point.
SET 3
- A kill by Hohnbaum and IU attack error lifted UNH within 8-6, but the Hoosiers won the next seven points to extend the margin to 15-6.
- Indiana held its first double-digit lead of the match at 18-8.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH is 4-1 in season openers under head coach Christopher Feliciano.
- Five Wildcats made their UNH debut on opening day -- freshmen Shattles and Miray Su Keskin (Ankara, Turkey), grad students Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) and Alysa Wright (Wayne, Pa.), as well as Karabulut, a junior.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- Friday marked the first ever matchup between the UNH and Southern Indiana volleyball programs.
- UNH is now 0-2 lifetime against Indiana; the Hoosiers prevailed 3-1 in August 2014 (at UConn).
