O’Connor Scores 16 in 51-41 Victory over Northeastern

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Avery O'Connor (Dedham, Mass) led the 'Cats with 16 points as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team defeated Northeastern University, 51-41 on Sunday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats' record improves to 3-5 (0-0-AE) and the Huskies fall to 5-3 (0-0-CAA).

FIRST QUARTER:
- Junior guard Clara Gomez (Barcelona, Spain) scored the first points of the game after spinning through the lane and converting a layup.
- Senior guard Belen Morales Lopez (Alicante, Spain) converted her first points of the game after receiving a pass from junior guard Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham Mass.) to extend the Wildcats early lead to 6-1.
- O'Connor checked into the game with just over two minutes in the first quarter and cashed in on her first two shots. She made a driving layup at 2:23 and banged home a three-pointer at 2:11 to put UNH up 13-7.
- O'Connor kept the hot hand going when she knocked down two more three-pointers to close out the first quarter and give the 'Cats a 19-7 lead.
SECOND QUARTER:
- The Wildcats began the second quarter on a 14-0 run thanks to yet another three-pointer from O'Connor.
- Matulonis splashed a three-pointer to extend the Wildcats lead to 25-10 thanks to a Morales Lopez assist.
- Gomez intercepted a Huskies pass and brought it all the way down the court to capitalize with a layup that put UNH up 29-13
- Matulonis pulled up from deep beyond the arch and splashed it to give the 'Cats a 20 point lead.
- At the end of the half, O'Connor's team leads the 'Cats with 14 points.
THIRD QUARTER:
- Matulonis found the bottom of the net for the first points of the second half with a lay up to put UNH up 36-16.
- Morales Lopez scored on back-to-back possessions to close out the quarter and set UNH up with a 41-26 lead headed into the final quarter of play.
- The Wildcats out rebounded the Huskies 11-7 in the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
- Sophomore guard Breezie Williams (Canton, Ohio) gave the 'Cats their first fourth quarter points with a layup.
- Williams found a cutting O'Connor who converted the layup to extend the Wildcats lead back to double digits after the Huskies brought the deficit to nine.
- The Huskies brought the score to a six-point deficit but Freshman guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J) knocked down a corner three in response.
- After Senior guard Adara Groman (Scituate, Mass.) made the final free throws of the game, the 'Cats were able to walk away with a 10 point victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UNH finished with the lead in 3-point field goal percentage (28% to 22.2%)
- UNH led with a higher field goal percentage (35.1% to 31.8%).
- UNH collected 38 rebounds compared to Northeastern with 34.
- Gomez recorded a season high 15 rebounds.
