Men’s Hockey Drops 6-1 Contest to UConn

Wildcats to play at Vermont on Feb. 11 and take on #14 UML on Feb. 13 at the Whitt
DURHAM, N.H. – Darion Hanson stopped 31 shots for the Huskies as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team fell to UConn, 6-1, on Saturday at the Whittemore Center.
The Huskies improve to 14-11-0 (10-6-0 HEA) and the Wildcats fall to 12-13-1 (6-10-1 HEA).
Senior forward Tyler Ward (Kamloops, British Columbia) netted the lone Wildcat goal. The Huskies received goals from six different goal scorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UConn got on the board 4:02 into the first period when Hudson Schandor redirected a pass on a 2-on-1 past senior goaltender Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.). Ryan Tverberg and Artem Shlaine notched assists on the goal.
- Ward evened the score with 41.6 seconds left in the period after a senior Ryan Verrier (Reading, Mass.) shot from the point rebounded to his stick in the slot and he wristed a shot stick side past Darion Hanson. Sophomore Luke Reid (Warman, Saskatchewan) also recorded an assist on the goal.
- Jachym Kondelik made it 2-1 UConn 4:29 into the second period after he caught a backdoor pass, brought the puck to the backhand, and tucked it past Robinson. Harrison Rees and Roman Kinal assisted the goal.
- Carter Turnbull increased the UConn lead to 3-1 with 8:18 left in the second period when he blocked a shot at the point, took it the length of the ice, and fired a shot glove side past Robinson on the breakaway.
- Vladisov Firtsov made it 4-1 UConn with 6:13 left in the second period when he redirected a shot from the point past Robinson from the slot. Jared Gourley and Jake Flynn posted assists.
- Shlaine scored an empty net goal at 16:13 of the third period. Flynn had another assist.
- Tverberg notched the sixth UConn goal at 17:50 of the third period for the 6-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Robinson made 25 saves, while Hanson posted 31 saves and stands at 14-10-0.
- UNH outshot UConn by a 32-31 margin.
- The Wildcats went 0-3 on the power play and the Huskies finished 0-1.
