Daniels Tallies 10 Points, 18 Rebounds in 66-61 Loss to Sacred Heart

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior forward Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) recorded 10 points and 18 rebounds but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 66-61 by Sacred Heart University at Lundholm Gym on Wednesday night.
Daniels recorded his third double-double of the season. Grad student guard Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, N.J.) led the team in scoring with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Junior guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) also scored in double digits with 11 points in his first game back from injury.
Nico Galette led Sacred Heart in points and rebounds with 17 and 13, respectively. Raheem Solomon scored 12 points while Mike Sixsmith finished with eight points and eight assists.
New Hampshire is now 2-4 overall as SHU, which ended the game on a 12-6 run in the final 5:30, improves to 5-3 on the season.
UNH returns to action Dec. 3 (4 p.m.) at Columbia University. The Wildcats' next home game is Monday, Dec. 12 (7 p.m.) against Saint Joseph's (Maine).

UNH scored the first four points of the game before SHU tied it up 4-4 and then 6-6. Matt Herasme (Chester, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 9-6 lead at 14:06 in the first half. SHU then went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead at 11:31.
UNH regained the lead when Johnson hit a 3-ball to make it 14-12 at 10:08. On the Wildcats' next possession, Kyree Brown (Oakland, Calif.) extended the lead with a three to give the 'Cats a 17-12 lead at 9:38.
SHU answered with a 3-pointer from Nico Galette on the following possession to cut the lead back down to 17-15 at 9:14.
The Pioneers regained the lead when Dom Mello was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws to make the score 19-18 at 8:32. The Wildcats then went on a 7-2 run, capped off by a three by Derry, at 4:23 to make it 25-20.
The end of the first half was even with 3's coming from Trey Woodyard (London, Ohio) at 2:40 and Johnson at 0:27. UNH went into halftime with a 33-29 lead.
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half, including Brown's 3-pointer, to give UNH its largest lead, 38-29. His pair of three throws matched that margin, 40-31, at 15:56. Daniels' nice move in the post to advance the score to 46-38 at 12:45.
SHU cut the deficit with back-to-back shots in the paint from Galette and a 3-pointer from Joey Reilly to cap off the 7-0 run making it 46-45 at 10:50. Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.) ended UNH's scoreless run with a 3-pointer at 10:28 to give UNH a 49-45 lead.
Trailing 55-49, the Pioneers had their best run of the game outscoring UNH 12-0. Sixsmith's layup put the visitors back on top, 56-55, to mark their first lead since 18-17 at 8:23 of the first half. Bryce Johnson's pair of free throws capped the run to give Sacred Heart a 61-55 lead at 1:57.
Daniels ended SHU's run with a layup after pulling down an offensive rebound to make it 61-57 at 1:29.
The Pioneers made 2 of 4 foul shots on the next two possessions to inch ahead, 63-57, with 32 seconds remaining.
Brown responded by sinking two free throws for UNH with 21 seconds remaining to make it 63-59. The Wildcats then intentionally fouled, and SHU made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 64-59 with 18 seconds remaining.
UNH went down the court and missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left and were then forced to intentionally foul with six seconds on the clock. SHU missed both of their shots, resulting in UNH advancing quickly up the court was fouled on a 3-point attempt with two seconds left in the game.
Johnson made the first two foul shots to make the score 64-61. He then missed the third shot on purpose to try and get a rebound. SHU got the ball, however, and scored a layup with 0.9 seconds remaining to close out the game with a final score of 66-61.
The Pioneers made 18 of 29 free throws and held on for the win despite shooting 3-for-8 in the final 90 seconds. UNH was 11 of 13 from the line.
UNH committed 12 turnovers and the Pioneers turned the ball over 11 times.
Sacred Heart outscored UNH 36-20 in the paint but the Wildcats made 10 3's to the Pioneers' four.
The visitors had a 39-33 rebounding advantage.
