DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team earned its third straight victory on Friday night against Siena College, 3-1 in the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 13-25 and 25-19.
With the victory, the Wildcats improve their record to 3-2 overall, while the Saints fall to 0-5 overall on the year with the loss.
"Today in sets one and two is the best engagement level I have seen since we started the young season," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "Definitely some moments of brilliance, still there are some things we need to clean up, but I think it's fair to say we are trending in the right direction, putting one foot in front of the other."
Freshman outside hitter Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) totaled a career-high 12 kills with a .391 hitting percentage for the Wildcats, which included the set-clinching kill in the second frame.
UNH freshman right side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) added 10 kills and a .273 hitting percentage, while senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) amassed nine kills, a .571 hitting percentage and six total blocks.
Junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) turned in a solid all-around match quarterbacking the 'Cats offense with 37 assists, 10 digs and seven kills.
"What's great about our group is anyone can play the hero offensively and defensively, it's truly a team, which is very different from what we have had in the past," stated Feliciano. "You have six young ladies that can play on the floor at any given time and you have a really deep bench that has covered up some of the injuries that we have had. We are in a really good place and we want to just continue moving with the momentum."
Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) chipped in with six kills, a .333 hitting percentage and four total blocks.
UNH registered 47 kills in the match with a .337 hitting percentage, including a 16-kill effort (.542 hit%) in the second stanza.
Greta Stjade totaled a match-high 17 kills with a .314 hitting percentage to pace the Saints offensively in the losing effort.
UNH wraps up the Holly Young Invitational on Saturday, September 4th against Providence College. Match time from Lundholm Gymnasium on ESPN3 is 2 p.m.
