Wildcats open America East play with sweep of Hartford

Kate Bilyeu registered a match-high 12 kills in the 'Cats victory

DURHAM, N.H. -- Senior outside hitter Kate Bilyeu (Omaha, Neb.) tallied a match-high 12 kills, a .367 hitting percentage and 12 digs to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team in a 3-0 sweep of Hartford in the America East opener on Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20.
The Wildcats improve to 8-6 overall (1-0 AE), while the Hawks fall to 2-12 (0-1 AE) after the loss.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman right side Marisa Armer (Brandenton, Fla.) each amassed nine kills apiece. Kaufmann hit at a .368 clip with three total blocks in the match for the 'Cats, while sophomore libero Mia Pagliarini (Springboro, Ohio) turned in another solid performance for 'Cats defense with a match-high 18 digs.
Junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) added 35 assists running the Wildcats' offense and added two service aces. Freshman Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) chipped in with five kills and five digs in the Wildcats eighth win of the season. Purcell's kill at the end of the second stanza clinched the set for the 'Cats.
The Wildcats hit .379 as a team in the opening set with 13 kills and registered 17 kills in the middle stanza with a .200 hitting percentage.
Camryn Luginbuhl totaled a team-high 11 kills in the losing effort for the Hawks.
UNH returns to action on Friday, October 1st against UMBC. Match time from Lundholm Gym is 2 p.m. on AmericaEast.tv.
