Wildcats Pick Up Win in Holly Young Invitational Opener vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1

DURHAM, N.H. - Freshman right side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) notched a career-high 18 kills to pace the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-1 win against Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening match of the Holly Young Invitational on Thursday night at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 24-26, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21.
UNH improves to 2-2 overall with the victory, while the Knights drop to a 2-2 record in the loss.
"I really liked what I saw tonight, we had an injury take place and our girls rallied, they didn't back down, they didn't falter," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "They should be very proud of themselves for a great team win. There are still some areas we need to clean up, but that's what preseason is for. We are trying to get better everyday as we approach every match."
Armer, who posted the match-clinching kill, registered a .387 hitting percentage to go along with four total blocks in the win for the 'Cats. Junior outside hitter Erin Hedrick (Montvale, N.J.) and sophomore middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.) each totaled eight kills apiece, with hitting percentage's of .300 and .389, respectively.
Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) added seven kills with a .263 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) amassed 42 assists on the night, along with eight digs and five kills. Senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) totaled four blocks and four kills in UNH's second win of the season.
On defense, sophomore Mia Pagliarini (Springboro, Ohio) led the way for the 'Cats again with 19 digs, while freshman Shea Purcell (Shaker Heights, Ohio) notched 13 digs and four kills in a strong outing.
New Hampshire registered a match-high 15 kills in the opening set with a .222 team hitting percentage and then followed that up with 14 kills and a .229 hitting percentage in the second frame. The 'Cats tallied 14 kills and hit at a .250 clip in the close out set against the Knights.
UNH went on a nice five-point run to take a 13-10 lead midway through the third stanza.
Magdelena Maksimovic and Madisyn Beirne notched 14 and 11 kills, respectively in the losing effort for FDU.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, September 3rd against Siena. Match time is 6:30 p.m. from Lundholm Gymnasium on AmericaEast.tv.
