DURHAM, N.H. – NCAA Division I hockey student-athletes, coaches and administrators announced a new initiative called College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. UNH sophomore goaltender Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) was one of the committee members who took part in Wednesday night's virtual news conference that introduced the initiative.
The College Hockey 4DEI is designed to create positive cultural change in the sport through communication, education, allyship and advocacy.

Harnett is part of a group of 27 people representing the 11 Division I hockey conferences that began meeting in the summer of 2020 and are at the forefront of leading the movement.
"College hockey has needed to make a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for a long time," Harnett stated. "Change is long overdue in our sport. I want this group to inspire a major culture change in college hockey, and for that change to transcend into all of hockey.
"I joined this group because I want so badly to change this world, but it's not something that happens overnight," Harnett added. "I know that I alone cannot create huge change, but this committee is allowing me to help create change in the sport that I love."
UNH alum and current Hockey East Commissioner Steve Metcalf is one of five members of the Working Group Leadership within the committee.
The group's mission statement was also announced: The College Hockey for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is dedicated to creating positive cultural change across our sport through communication, education, allyship, and advocacy. Together we are working for a better tomorrow, one shift at a time.
