Jackson Pierson scores two goals for the Wildcats.

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Jackson Pierson (Zionsville, Ind.) scored two goals to lead the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team tied Vermont at the Whittemore Center, 3-3, on Saturday evening. Freshman Robert Cronin (Plymouth, Mass.) also posted a goal in tonight's game. The Catamounts won the shootout 2-1 to earn the extra point in the Hockey East Standings.

The Wildcats are now 4-6-1 (2-4-1 Hockey East), while the Catamounts are 1-6-1 (1-2-1 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

At 1:46 of the first period Cronin knocked in a rebound, low glove side off a shot by freshman Will Margel (Potomac, Md.) to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Senior Filip Engarås (Stockholm, Sweden) also posted an assist on the goal.
Then, at 5:41 of the first period, Ray Vitolins passed the puck to Andrew Lucas who fired a one timer from the slot to the upper stick side of the net for the Catamounts to tie the game 1-1.
At 4:02 of the second period Pierson wristed a shot low to the glove side increasing the lead to 2-1. Junior Chase Stevenson (West Kelowna, British Columbia) and junior Kalle Eriksson (Leksand, Sweden) both posted an assist on the goal.
The Catamounts answered back at 9:02 of the second period, when Jacques Bouquot scored off a rebound tying the game at 2-2.
On a power play, Pierson blasted a shot above the right faceoff circle at 13:07 of the second period to take the lead. Eriksson and Cronin both tallied an assist on the play.
At 16:44 of the second period, William Lemay received a pass from Cory Babichuk and sent the puck soaring to the back of the net, glove side as the Catamounts tied the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless overtime period and the shootout tied at 1-1, Andrew Lucas found the back of the net as Vermont won the shootout 2-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Junior goalie David Fessenden (Parker, Colo.) made 17 saves and is 2-1-1 on the season, while Gabe Carriere posted 36 saves.
UNH outshot Vermont by a 39-20 margin.
The Wildcats went 1-1 on the power play, while the Catamounts went 0-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

UNH is 4-2-1 at the Whittemore Center this season.
