WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Redshirt junior Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) and freshman Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) of the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team were named co-Player of the Week and Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday by Hockey East.
The duo led UNH to a home-and-home sweep of Merrimack College last weekend in which the Wildcats did not allow a goal.
Boutilier stopped all 30 shots faced to record a pair of shutout victories against Merrimack College in the Jan. 22-23 series; UNH had not recorded consecutive shutouts in nearly a decade (Feb. 12 & 19, 2011). It marked the second and third shutouts of the season for Boutilier, who increased her career total to 10.
Boutilier made 18 saves and kept Merrimack scoreless on six power plays in last Friday's 3-0 win at Lawler Rink.
The redshirt junior captain was credited with 12 saves this past Saturday at the Whittemore Center and once again kept the Warriors' power play at bay on all three extra skater opportunities to extend her shutout streak to 122 minutes, 4 seconds.
This is the second Hockey East weekly award of the 2020-21 season for Boutilier, who was named Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 28, 2020. This is the first Player of the Week honor for the goalie, who has received Defensive Player of the Week accolades eight times.
Brooks scored a career-high two goals for a personal best of two points to propel UNH to the 4-0 win against Merrimack College at the Whittemore Center. Her first goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 53 seconds into the game and that proved to be the game-winning goal. She struck again 73 seconds into the third period to extend the lead to 4-0
Brooks recorded a team-high eight shots (25% of UNH's 32 shots) and a +2 rating in Saturday's win to finish the weekend with nine shots and a +2 rating.
Last week, Hockey East announced that the remainder of the regular-season schedule would be released weekly on Tuesdays.
