Campaign urges all Wildcat student-athletes to vote on Nov. 3, 2020
DURHAM, N.H. – The UNH Department of Athletics' Committee on Mutual Respect (COMR) announced plans Friday to encourage all Wildcat student-athletes to let their voices be heard by voting on 2020 Election Day (Nov. 3, 2020) through the #UseYourRoar campaign.
The #UseYourRoar campaign will include educating student-athletes on voter registration and using the COMR as a resource to ensure all Wildcats will have the opportunity to get to the polls in Durham on Nov. 3. To that end, there will be no athletics' activities scheduled that day, including training and games.
"Wildcat fans are already familiar with the #BeTheRoar slogan that encourages school spirit for each of our athletic programs, so now we are proud to unveil the #UseYourRoar campaign to inspire our student-athletes to use their voices and vote on Election Day," said UNH men's soccer associate head coach and COMR chair Rich Weinrebe.
The plan calls for providing student-athletes with all necessary information to educate themselves on important issues locally, regionally and nationally in the lead-up to elections. Further, the COMR will be mindful of international students and the procedures involved in the electoral systems of their native countries. Absentee balloting and other out-of-state voting requests will be facilitated.
"Our goal is 100-percent voting participation among our student-athletes, and we will do everything in our power to make sure they know how, when and where they have the right to vote," said UNH athletic director Marty Scarano.
A letter sent to all student-athletes by the COMR stated:
As adults, you have the right to #UseYourRoar on Nov. 3, and our goal is to achieve 100% participation from the Wildcats. It is not our intent to tell you how you should vote, only to ensure you have all the tools to make you an informed voter who can help shape the future.
