DURHAM, N.H. – Nelson Thomas (Plainfield, N.J.), a senior on the University of New Hampshire football team, was awarded second place overall, as well as the People's Choice Award, in the 32nd Annual Paul College Holloway Competition for the ecoText, Inc. business plan. ecoText is a collaboration between Thomas, the chief marketing officer, Dylan Wheeler and Rachel Yee.
This year's competition began with 50 teams, was pared to 20 and then the six finalists, from which the top three award winners were selected.
WATCH PRESENTATION
Every semester, college students and their families struggle to cover the high cost of textbooks. ecoText's mission is to reduce these financial obstacles to create opportunity through affordability.
ecoText is designed to bridge the gaps between colleges, publishers, professors and students by aggregating titles onto its online platform that is positioned to become the ultimate collaboration learning tool for college students and professors.
ecoText is also sustainability focused. The business plan estimated that per 15,000 students, upwards of 3,600 trees would be saved.
Founded in 1989, the Holloway Competition is one of the first and oldest business plan idea competitions. This multi-track competition takes students out of the classroom and into the real world. It challenges students to develop products or services and present plans to bring them to market.
Through the years, hundreds of UNH students have launched dozens of successful companies. Of the 330 Holloway finalists prior to this year, 98 – almost one-third – went on to found and own their own business.
