The freshman goaltender earns her second weekly accolade of the season.
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman goaltender Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) backstopped the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 overtime victory over UConn at the Whittemore Center on Saturday afternoon. With a career-high 32 saves, Harnett earned her second victory of the season and her first career shutout.
Harnett got the start in Saturday's contest, just her third start of the season and her first at the Whittemore Center. Harnett stopped all 32 UConn shots on target, including several plays worthy of the highlight reel. Harnett battled against UConn's Morgan Fisher (this week's defensive player of the week) to a scoreless tie going into overtime, where Harnett's blue-liner Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal 2:15 into the extra frame.
Harnett has earned the decision in four; her record on the season so far is 2-1-1. Her first career win came the previous weekend at Penn State in a 2-1 victory.
The Wildcats have claimed the Rookie of the Week award four times this season; Harnett was the first weekly freshman nod of the season when she was named Rookie of the Week on October 21. Overall, UNH has had a weekly award seven times this season.
New Hampshire women's hockey is amidst a five-game homestand, as the Wildcats host the Providence College Friars this Friday and Saturday to wrap up their season series. Friday night's game is set to start at 6 P.M., Saturday's matinee begins at 2 P.M. For tickets, visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call (603)862-4000.
