Smith Records Double-Double in 3-1 Loss at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was upended 3-1 by the University of Rhode Island in Friday night's 11th Annual Art Carmichael Invitational at URI's Keaney Gymnasium.
Smith's match-high 13 kills led three Wildcats in double-digit kills. Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) followed with 12 kills on a .310 hitting percentage, and Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.), the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, finished with 11 kills. Olhava recorded a match-high five blocks; Smith had three.
Both the 13 kills and 19 digs, as well as the .250 hitting percentage, were season highs for Smith in her first double-double of the season.
Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.) amassed 43 assists and two-time Defensive Specialist of the Week Emilly Tanksi (Plymouth, Mich.) had a team-high 21 digs.
UNH is now 2-6 and URI is 4-4.

SET 1
- There were seven ties and one lead change in the opening set.
- URI built and early four-point lead, 6-2, before the Wildcats rallied to tie the score at 8.
- The set was also level at 9, 10, 12, 15 and 16, but every time the Rams won the next point to regain the lead.
- URI inched ahead, 18-16, to prompt the first timeout of the match – called by New Hampshire.
- A Rams' service error lifted the Wildcats within one point, but the home team won the next two points to build a three-point cushion, 20-17.
- Wiedenfeld recorded a kill and combined with Wotton for a block to once again trim the deficit to one point, 20-19, but Rhode Island answered with back-to-back points to reestablish a three-point lead, 22-19, and close out the first set at 25-21.
SET 2
- There was one tie and no lead changes in the second set.
- For the second consecutive set, URI build leads of 4-1 and 6-2. This time, however, the Rams continued to pull away to a six-point advantage, 10-4.
- New Hampshire rallied within 12-10, but consecutive Wildcat errors helped the home team extend the lead to 15-10.
- Smith's ninth kill of the match ignited a 5-0 run that tied the set at 15. The run included a kill by Olhava, ace by Tanski and kill by Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to tie it.
- URI answered with five consecutive points to surge in front, 20-15.
- Trailing 22-17, UNH called a timeout and went on a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to 23-31, but the Rams won the next two points to once again close out the set 25-21.
SET 3
- There were four ties and one lead change in the third set.
- It was tight early as neither team led by more than two points until consecutive kills by Smith gave the 'Cats a 10-7 lead.
- UNH inched ahead, 15-11, prompting a Rams' timeout.
- Rhode Island went on a 6-2 spurt to close within 17-16, but the Wildcats responded with a 5-0 run, including a kill by Alexa Markman (Chicago, Ill.) and Wiedenfeld, and a Patlovich service ace.
- URI stopped the run to close within 22-18 but would get no closer as the 'Cats ended the set on a 3-0 run to extend the match.
SET 4
- There were three ties and one lead change in the fourth set.
- New Hampshire carried momentum into Set 4 to take a 3-1 lead.
- With the set tied at 4, URI won the next four points as part of an 8-1 run to build a commanding 12-5 advantage.
- The Rams extend the lead to 18-10 before UNH called time out and went on a 3-1 spurt to trim the deficit to six points, 19-13.
- The Wildcats would get no closer the rest of the way, however, as the home team closed out the set and match, 25-15.
