Toews’ short-handed goal and Boutilier’s first career shutout lift ‘Cats over Friars.

DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire senior captain Carlee Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) scored a short-handed goal in the second period and freshman goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) made 22 saves in her first career shutout as the Wildcats took down the #8 Providence College Friars 1-0.

Toews' goal was assisted by Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.) who now has two short-handed points on the season (1g, 1a). The victory was the Wildcats' first victory over a ranked team this season, entering the game with a 0-6-1 record against teams in the top 10.

The Wildcats take a break from conference play next weekend as they travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac.

GAME RECAP

Both teams had their fair share of chances in the first with UNH getting two power play opportunities and Providence getting one of their own. UNH outshot Providence 12-5 in the first period.
Toews' short handed goal came 14:08 into the second period; McManus took the puck off a Providence rebound and skated along the far-side boards, sending the puck into the offensive zone. McManus then followed the puck behind the net, got swarmed by several Providence defenders, and sent the puck out in front to Toews who held onto her shot until she had Myers out of position and fired the shot.
UNH kept the pressure on in the third period, outshooting the Friars 8-5 in the period. With the Providence goaltender pulled, the Friars got a chance in front of the net with the puck in the crease sitting still, but the 'Cats cleared it out of danger before a Friar could get a stick on the puck.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

The loss for Providence is only their second shutout loss of the season, losing to Quinnipiac 1-0 early this season. The win for UNH is their second shut out victory of the season.
Toews' short-handed goal was the third for the Wildcats' this season.
The Wildcats are now 1-2-4 in the front-end of back to back games and 4-1-2 in the back end.
UNH is now 3-1-2 following a tie.
