Bowman Named To All-Tournament Team as Jack Kaiser Classic Ends

QUEENS, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team was upended by both St. John's University and Sacramento State University on Saturday afternoon to complete the season-opening weekend at the Jack Kaiser Classic with a 1-3 record.
Senior captain Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was UNH's representative on the All-Tournament Team. In the four tournament matches, she compiled 31 kills (2.21 per set), 48 digs (3.43 per set), 11 assists and five blocks. Bowman recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs Friday vs. UConn. Bowman also tallied a career-high 18 digs vs. St. John's.
In Saturday's first match of the day – the third match overall in the tourney – against St. John's, the host team won two closely-contested sets, 27-25 and 25-22, then completed the sweep by a score of 25-19 in Set 3.
In the final match of the tourney, the Wildcats and Hornets split two close sets with Sacramento State winning Set 1, 25-22, and UNH leveling the match in Set 2, 25-17. The Hornets won the next two sets (25-18, 25-9) for the victory.
St. John's and Sacramento State both finished the Jack Kaiser Classic at 3-1. The Red Storm won the tourney title by virtue of its head-to-head victory.

- Smith's five service aces marked the most by a Wildcat since 2012, when current assistant coach Morgan Thatcher also had five against Rhode Island on Aug. 31; Sam Henke matched that mark less than two weeks later (Sept. 11) at Bryant.
SET 1
- UNH went on a 4-0 run, including consecutive service aces by Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.), to take an early 6-3 lead.
- St. John's slowly chipped away and leveled the score at 12.
- The Wildcats won seven of the next eight points to build a 19-13 advantage.
- The home team responded with a 10-1 run to surge in front 23-20.
- New Hampshire staved off three set points but succumbed on the fourth as St. John's took the first set, 27-25.
SET 2
- There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the second set.
- St. John's stormed out to an 11-7 lead but UNH rallied to go ahead 15-14.
- The Wildcats led 19-17 but St. John's closed out the set with an 8-3 spurt.
SET 3
- The third set saw nine tie scores and five lead changes.
- UNH went on a 4-0 run to level the score at 15.
- The score advanced to 19-19, but St. John's closed the match with six consecutive points.

- Smith recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.
- Welti's 20 digs marked a career high. She was credited with a team-high 71 digs on the weekend – 5.07 per set.
- Patlovich, a freshman, was the primary setter in both of Saturday's matches; she finished with 33 assists in both matches and 107 total (7.64 per set) for the tournament.
SET 1
- New Hampshire edged out to a 7-3 lead, but the Hornets went on a 9-3 run to take the 12-10 advantage.
- UNH responded with a 7-1 spurt to regain a 17-13 lead.
- The score advanced to 22-22 and Sacramento State closed out the first set with three consecutive points.
SET 2
- Momentum continues on the Hornets' side at the outset of the second set, as the designated home team built a 6-1 lead.
- The 'Cats quickly closed within 8-6 and won four consecutive points to take a 10-8 lead.
- New Hampshire went on a 5-0 run to build a 17-12 advantage and UNH kept the Hornets at bay the rest of the way.
SET 3
- With the score tied at 5, Sacramento State went on a 11-2 run to take control.
- UNH fended off five match points, but eventually succumbed 25-18.
SET 4
- The Hornets held a 5-3 lead when they went on an 11-3 run to build a double-digit lead, 16-6.
