VOLLEYBALL CONCLUDES PLAY AT BIG ORANGE TOURNAMENT

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –- The University of New Hampshire
volleyball team concluded play at the Big Orange Tournament
Saturday. The Wildcats dropped the first match of the day 3-0 to
Sacramento State and concluded with a 3-0 loss to Siena in a later
match.
The set scores in the first match were 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17,
while the set scores in the Siena match were 25-21, 25-18 and
25-12. The Wildcats are now 0-3 overall.
In the match against Sacramento State, Justine
Elliott (Mitchellville, Md.), who was UNH's Big
Orange All-Tournament selection, had a team-high 10 kills and hit
at a .526 clip. Freshman setter Jansan Falcusan
(Plymouth, Mich.) had a team-high 23 assists and 10 digs. The
Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set, the Hornets
would answer with a 9-2 run to make it 9-8. Sacramento State built
a seven-point lead at 22-15 and went on to capture the first set
25-17. The second set was back-and-forth throughout with neither
team holding a lead of more than four. The teams were tied at 17-17
until the Hornets went on a mini 7-3 run to build a 24-20 and went
on for the 25-22 win. In the final set of the match, UNH once again
built an early lead holding leads of 4-1 and 10-6 in the early
going. Sacramento State tied it at 12-12 and took 18-13 lead during
a 12-3 run. The Hornets held on to that lead and went on for the
25-17 win. In the final two sets, Sacramento State hit at .256 and
.243 clips with 14 and 16 kills in each respective set.
Against Siena, Taylor Dressing (Gillette, N.J.)
paced the Wildcat offense with eight kills, seven digs and one
block. Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) chipped in
with seven kills, while Lindsay Fogarty
(Pleasanton, Calif.) and Elliott each added six kills. Kate
Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) had a team-high 30 assists and
also added 10 digs. Defensively, Sara Heldman
(Greenwood, Ind.) tallied a team-high 14 defensive digs. The first
set was back-and-forth with neither side holding a lead of more
than three in the early going. With the score tied at 18-18, Siena
captured seven of the final 10 points to capture the first set
25-21. The Wildcats had a match-high 16 kills during the set. In
the second set, the Saints built an early cushion and held on for a
seven-point win. Siena hit at a match-best .409 clip during the
set. In the final set, the Saints scored the first seven points of
the match and held that lead throughout the set and went on to
capture the final set 25-12.
UNH returns to action Sept. 1, when the 'Cats play Bentley
University in an exhibition match. Match time is 7 p.m. at Lundholm
Gymnasium.
