University of New Hampshire Athletics

Lundholm Gymnasium is located in the Field House and is home to both the men's and women's basketball teams, the volleyball team and the gymnastics team. In December 2000, the University of New Hampshire athletic department received approval to begin the restoration of Lundholm Gymnasium. The gym, dedicated in name of Carl Lundholm in 1968, a 1921 graduate of the University and also the athletic department's director from 1939 to 1963, had served as the primary home of the Wildcat basketball programs for several decades.
The court was deemed Friel Court, named after the late Gerry Friel on January 27, 2008. Gerry Friel spent 20 years (1969-89) as the head coach for the University of New Hampshire men's basketball program. In 2006, Gerry Friel was inducted to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Recent renovations of Lundholm Gymnasiun includes a refinished floor as well as new bleachers, lighting, sound system and scoreboards. Friel ranks a top of all men's basketball coaches at UNH in the 100 years of the program with 188 victories. Following the '82-'83 season, he was named the ECAC North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year. He was named New England and U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District Coach of the Year as well that year.
