Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week: Claire Ronan and Yoofi Abaka-Amuah

DURHAM, N.H. – Grad student Claire Ronan (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) of the UNH women's track & field team and senior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) of the UNH men's track & field were named the Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on April 21.
Claire won the 1,500-meter run title at the Virginia Challenge on April 17. She was the champion with a time of 4 minutes, 26.22 seconds. Claire was first across the finish line in the sixth section and that personal-best time was fastest among the 84 runners in the event. It is also the second-fastest time by an America East runner this season.
Claire was third in the lead pack through the first 300m and fourth place through 700m. She improved her split to 1:12.65 on the next lap to hold steady in fourth place, then ran the final 400m in 1:08.05 for an overall time of 4:26.22.
Claire bested runners from Power 4 schools – Virginia, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Penn State, Pitt – and her previous PR (4:30.62) by more than four seconds.
The UNH women's track & field team returns to action April 24-25 for the Wildcat Invitational at the Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility. Friday's events begin at 2pm and Saturday's start time is 11am.
Yoofi was the only one of the seven Wildcats who travelled to the Virginia Challenge to compete in more than one event. His top finish came in the hammer throw, where his personal-best effort of 60.39m (198 feet-1 inch) placed seventh. It is the sixth-best mark in America East this season.
Yoofi went on to finish 14th in a field of 37 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 17.40m (57-1). He recorded a mark of 17.27m on his first attempt and bested that with his scoring mark in the third round.
Then on Saturday (April 18), Yoofi finished 19th in the discus with a mark of 48.76m (160-0) that is fifth best in the conference this season.
Yoofi's competition included throwers from Power 4 schools Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Penn State and Pitt.
