Chertock Notches 12 Kills, Four Digs in Three-Set Loss to Rutgers

Marathon Second Set Featured 62 points in Rutgers Invitational Nightcap
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Despite a tight first set and a marathon second-set push that featured 62 combined points, the UNH volleyball team fell in straight sets to host Rutgers, 25-23, 32-30, 25-21, on Friday night at Jersey Mike's Arena in the Rutgers Invitational.
UNH (5-3), which defeated Saint Francis 3-1 in its earlier Friday game, jumped out to an 8-2 lead against the Big Ten's Scarlet Knights (8-2) in the first set behind a string of Rutgers attack errors and a kill from junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.). The Wildcats held a 17-13 advantage before Rutgers rallied with a 12-6 run to close the set, capped by a kill from Natalie Robinson.
In the second set, UNH battled through 11 ties and forced extra points. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) and Grier each delivered key kills late, and junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) added a service ace to tie the set at 23. The Wildcats had set point at 30-29, but Rutgers responded with three straight points to take the frame.
The third set saw the Scarlet Knights pull away midway through, using a 7-1 run to build a 21-14 lead. UNH fought back with a pair of kills from Grier and a service ace from senior Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.), but Rutgers closed out the match with a kill from Tara Garvey.
Top Performers
•Chertock led the Wildcats with 12 kills and added four digs, while Grier contributed seven kills and a match-high five blocks.
•Shattles paced the offense with 22 assists and chipped in five digs and a service ace.
•Senior Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) added six kills and two digs, and LePore recorded seven digs and a service ace.

•Coach Feliciano makes his return to Rider on Saturday, Sept. 13 (1 p.m.) to conclude the Rutgers Invitational. Feliciano served eight seasons (2011-18) as Rider's head coach before being named UNH head coach on March 12, 2019. Feliciano is the winningest coach in Rider history with 117 victories. The Broncs won 10-plus conference matches each of his last five years at the school, and they tallied at least 15 wins six consecutive seasons.
