BOSTON - Sophomore guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) of the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was named the America East Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Conference on Wednesday.
DeChent, a transfer from the University of Rhode Island, led the conference in scoring, averaging 17.9 points per game with 519 total points. She recorded 10 games with 20+ points, including six with 25 or more.
She also topped the league in free throws made (135) while ranking third in free throw percentage (76%). DeChent was tied for first in minutes per game (33.4) and finished third in both total steals (52) and steals per game (1.8). She led UNH in scoring, 3-pointers made (42), steals, blocks (14), and minutes played (970).
DeChent is UNH's first First Team All-Conference selection since Ashley Storey '20 in 2019-20 and just the 11th in program history. She is also the Wildcats' first conference scoring champion since Kris Kenney '89, who won back-to-back titles in 1987-88 and 1988-89.
On Dec. 1, DeChent earned America East Player of the Week honors—UNH's first since 2020—after averaging 24 points, five rebounds, and two blocks per game in a 1-1 week. That included a career-high 34-point performance at Dartmouth, where she went 11-for-21 from the field and 10-for-10 at the free-throw line.
She also dropped 34 points in a win over Boston University on Nov. 16, becoming just the eighth Wildcat to score 30+ points in a game since 2008-09 and the first to do so since 2019. She finished just four points shy of the program record of 38, set in 1990.
The eighth-seeded Wildcats return to action in the 2025 Jersey Mike's America East Women's Basketball Playoffs, facing top-seeded UAlbany in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. at Broadview Center.
