This fall semester, the UNH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) made a big impact in the lives of local families through the successful 11th annual Hoops for Hunger on Nov. 19 and the America East Food Frenzy.
Â
Â
Nineteen teams came out and participated in the 3-vs.-3 basketball tournament that raised $400 toward the Cornucopia Food Pantry along with the 2,000 non-perishable food items that were collected by the UNH student-athletes for the America East Food Frenzy.
Â
Â
Senior men's hockey captain Alex Gagne (Bedford, N.H.), SAAC Community Liaison, helped make this event possible.
"Hoops for Hunger was an incredible event that brought together our campus community for a fun-filled 3-vs.-3 basketball tournament, all while making a meaningful impact by supporting our local food drive."
Â
Â
The event consisted of multiple rounds of 3-vs.-3 basketball games with a men's and women's bracket. UNH athletes and students from across campus were able to go head-to-head and show off their basketball skills with the help from the UNH men's basketball team, who were the refs for each game and supervised.
Â
Â
Junior lacrosse midfielder Paige Kenny (Kensington, Md.), who is a SAAC representative from her team, recruited a handful of her teammates to join in this event with her.
Â
Â
"Hoops for Hunger is such a fantastic event every year. It allows us to serve our community in a competitive and engaging way and brings all of campus together with the common goal of helping those in need."
Â
Â
There was a $20 entry fee for each team. SAAC catered Domino's pizza for all participants, and Dunkin' gift cards were given to the winning men's and women's teams. This year, football and women's soccer were the overall victors.
Â
Â
Graduate student women's soccer forward Ally Giovino (Westford, Mass.) was on the winning team.
Â
"Hoops for Hunger was such a fun experience where the whole campus could come together to play basketball for an amazing cause. I absolutely loved participating as the environment was amazing!"
Â
Â
Members from the women's soccer and track and field teams were supervised by SAAC coordinator and UNH Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Wellness and Academic Support Services, Evan Gray, and brought all cans and money to the Cornucopia Food Pantry on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving just in time to provide non-perishable food items to the less fortunate this holiday season.
Â
Â
The Cornucopia Food Pantry was very grateful for everything our UNH athletic community does to support local people in need.
