Wildcats return to the America East Championships for the first time since 2022

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team is headed to the America East Championship!

The Wildcats defeated UMBC 3-1 Friday night in the America East Semifinals.

The set scores were 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, and 25-21.

Junior right-side hitter Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind) led UNH's attack with 15 kills and 17 points. Graduate Student outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) was next up with 14 kills and 15 points. UNH used two primary setters as sophomore Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led the 'Cats with 26 assists and freshman Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif) recorded 21. Junior libero/defensive specialist Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn) led the team with 10 digs.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 for the America East Championship match vs. UAlbany (hosted by Binghamton) at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.

SET ONE

Two consecutive aces from Shattles sparked a 7-2 start for the Wildcats. Serbousek, graduate student middle blocker Kelly Kaufmann (Raleigh, N.C.), and senior outside hitter Ezgi Karabulut (Ankara, Turkey) tallied kills in that stretch.
UMBC fought back as they tied the set at eight but a block from senior right-side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) along with a Karabulut ace set the 'Cats back up three points.
UNH began to run away with the set as Serbousek recorded three kills, and Armer, Hohnbaum, and Kaufmann recorded one to go up 20-13.
The Wildcats took set one by a score of 25-17. The final five points were kills by Hohnbaum, Karabulut, Grier, and LePore. A block from Armer and Grier was mixed in as well.

SET TWO

UMBC hit the ground running early in set two after going up 10-5.
The Wildcats bounced back and tied the score at 13 with kills from Serbousek and Hohnbaum. Kaufmann, Karabulut, and Grier also recorded a block.
The score tied at 14, 15, 16, and 17 before the Retrievers ran away with their lead for the remainder of the set (25-22).
Two kills from Kaufmann and Serbousek along with one from Armer worked to get the 'Cats back in the set but UMBC tied the match up at one.

SET THREE

UNH went down 2-0 before a Retriever attack error and a Kaufmann and Karabulut block tied the score back at two.
Two kills by Hohnbaum, a block by Grier and Hohnbaum, and a kill from Karabulut catapulted the 'Cats in front 6-4.
UMBC shot ahead by taking an 11-8 lead that they did not give up until Grier and Armer recorded a block at 16-15.
A Singleton ace sparked UNH momentum that UMBC could not defend. The 'Cats did not give up their lead and won set three 25-23 after a block by Armer and Grier.

SET FOUR

Set four tied at two, five, seven, and eight before the Wildcats went on a 5-1 run to put them up 13-9. Two kills and an ace from Grier along with an Armer kill made up that run.
UMBC fought to come back but the Wildcats had a response for every one of their points.
The Wildcats won the match with a powerful Hohnbaum kill at 25-21.

UNH NOTEBOOK

This is the Wildcats' first time returning to the America East Championship match since 2022.
UNH seeks its first America East Championship since 2016 when they defeated UAlbany 3-0 at Lundholm Gymnasium.
Hohnbaum was named America East Jersey Mike's A Sub Above Player of the Game.
Head coach Christopher Feliciano is seeking his first America East Championship as a Wildcat.
