RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore defensive end Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.) of the University of New Hampshire was named the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
With Monmouth facing 4th-and-22 at the MU 47 on the first play of the second quarter, Silver blocked a punt, senior Charles Briscoe III (Bowie, Md.) picked up the loose ball at the MU 35 and raced into the end zone to give UNH a 14-7 lead. It marked the first blocked kick of Silver's career.
Silver forced Monmouth into that punting situation. On the last play of the first quarter, he sacked Tony Muskett for a seven-yard loss. Silver finished the game with four tackles, including two solo stops and that sack, as well as the blocked punt.
That blocked punt for a touchdown helped fuel New Hampshire to a 31-21 season-opening victory against Monmouth in a Thursday Night Throwdown, presented by Dunkin', at Wildcat Stadium.
Silver was selected to the 2022 CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team. He was also named to a preseason All-America Team by both Stats Perform and HERO Sports.
As a true freshman in 2021, Silver tied for No. 2 in the nation in forced fumbles, No. 5 in sacks and No. 7 in tackles for loss. He was named to three All-America teams, including Second Team by the Associated Press, as well as the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year.
New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 10 (7 p.m.) at UAlbany. The Wildcats' next home game is Sept. 17 (6 p.m.) vs. North Carolina Central. Buy tickets for any UNH home game online by CLICKING HERE, calling (603) 862-4000 or visiting the ticket office located in the Whittemore Center.
