Forty-eight student-athletes from the University of New Hampshire were inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in the first in person ceremony in three years on Friday night. An additional 33 UNH student-athletes have maintained the requirements of the society since last year, as a total of 81 student-athletes were recognized.
Joanne Maldari, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support, was very excited to be back in person.
"It is great being able to hand out certificates and chords while having all the student-athletes together in one group. Having the different athletes seeing their peers being honored is definitely the best part."
The society consists of junior and senior student-athletes from a wide range of sports and majors. The members must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be of good moral character.
The purpose of Chi Alpha Sigma is to encourage and recognize high academic achievements by student-athletes and to encourage good citizenship, moral character and friendship.
Along with Maldari, Director of Athletics Marty Scarano and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Wayne Jones spoke at the ceremony.
With this being an annual event recognizing UNH student-athletes, Maldari explained why it is so important.
"This event allows us to highlight some of our outstanding student-athletes. Being a junior or senior with a GPA of 3.5, as well as a student-athlete is remarkable and they deserve this recognition."
Junior field hockey student-athlete Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) explained how important it is to be a student as well as an athlete.
"I am honored to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma because it emphasizes the effort I've placed on the 'student' in student-athlete. I work hard off of the field, and really appreciate the tools UNH Athletics provides us to excel not only athletically, but also academically."
Women's ice hockey junior Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario) recognized the change in her mindset after coming to UNH and appreciates how her academic success has been rewarded.
"Coming into college, my mindset was all about playing hockey. Throughout my time at UNH, I have recognized the importance of student first, athlete second. Managing both over the years has taught me how crucial time management is and how important it is to excel in the classroom. Having my hard work and academic achievements rewarded by being inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma will keep me motivated to continue my academic success in the years to come."
Senior swimmer Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.) appreciates how her hard work and dedication is being honored for the second year in a row.
"It's a great honor to be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma for a second year along with many of my fellow teammates. This achievement shows our dedication both in and out of the pool."
