NHL Update-Five Former Wildcats Currently Playing in the National Hockey League

Five former UNH Wildcats are currently playing in the National Hockey League: forward James van Riemsdyk (2007-09) for the Philadelphia Flyers, defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (2011-14) for the Washington Capitals, goalie Casey DeSmith (2011-14) for the Pittsburgh Penguins, defenseman Brett Pesce (2012-15) for the Carolina Hurricanes and forward Warren Foegele (2014-15) for the Edmonton Oilers.
Here is an update for the games played from Oct. 12- Oct. 25, 2021:
James van Riemsdyk has appeared in the first four games of the season with two assists for two points. van Riemsdyk played in his 800th NHL game versus the Boston Bruins on Oct. 20 and tallied one assist. This is his 13th NHL season with 264 goals and 262 assists for 526 career points.
Trevor van Riemsdyk has appeared in the first five games of the season for the Washington Capitals. He has a total of three assists. van Riemsdyk is playing in his eighth season in the NHL and his second season with the Washington Capitals. He has a total of 16 goals and 59 assists for 75 career points.
DeSmith has appeared in one game so far this season and had 34 saves versus Florida on Oct. 14. In his fourth NHL season, DeSmith has played in a total of 71 games with 59 career starts.
Pesce has played in the first four games for the Carolina Hurricanes with three assists for three points. He posted two assists versus the Nashville Predators in the 3-2 win on Oct. 16. He tallied one assist versus the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 23. Pesce is currently in his seventh season in the NHL with a total of 24 goals and 106 assists for 130 points.
Foegele has appeared in all five games so far for the Edmonton Oilers with one goal and two assists for three points. He posted his first goal of the season versus the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 21 for a total of three points. Foegele is playing in his fifth season in the NHL and his first season with the Oilers. He has a total of 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 career points.
The Wildcats have five NHL Draft picks on the 2021-2022 roster: senior Mike Robinson (San Jose-86th overall pick in 2015), senior Filip Engarås (Edmonton-169th overall pick in 2020), junior Harrison Blaisdell (Winnipeg- 134th overall pick in 2019), sophomore Luke Reid (Nashville-166th overall pick in 2020) and freshman defenseman Alex Gagne (Tampa Bay- 192nd overall pick in 2021).
UNH travels to Providence on Friday, Oct. 29 for a 7 p.m. contest at Schneider Arena on NESN+. The two teams will then return to the Whittemore Center on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. on College SportsLive. PURCHASE TICKETS HERE
