Wildcats' 10-4 Start Is The Program's Best Since 1978
TOWSON, Md. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team extended its win streak to four matches with a straight-set win against NJIT, then lost to Towson University in straight sets at the Tiger Invitational at SECU Arena on Sunday.
The set scores vs. NJIT were 25-12, 25-15, 25-15. Towson prevailed 25-8, 25-17, 33-31 to improve to 10-2.
UNH is 10-4 overall and went 2-1 at all four tournaments this season. NJIT fell to 1-12.
UP NEXT: UNH begins America East conference action Oct. 4 (7 p.m.) at the University at Albany. The Wildcats also play at UMBC that weekend (Oct. 6; 1 p.m.).
NEXT HOME MATCH: New Hampshire's next home match is Oct. 11 against Binghamton University. It is earmarked as a Dig Pink fundraiser for the Sideout Foundation, and pink pom poms will be given away to fans.

SUNDAY'S STAT LEADERS
•Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a total of 22.5 points on 19 kills (.232 hitting percentage), three service aces and a block; she also had 12 digs.
•Katie Jablonski (Elburn, Ill.) finished with 15.5 points on 13 kills (.321 hitting percentage), and five blocks.
•Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) tallied 15.0 points with 10 kills (.318 hitting percentage) and nine blocks.
•Wren Macaulay (Lake Orion, Mich.) had 29 assists as well as three service aces and 17 digs.
•Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) recorded 21 digs.
UNH NOTEBOOK
•Smith and Tanski were named to the All-Tournament Team.
•New Hampshire recorded 40 kills and just four attack errors vs. NJIT for a season-high .396 hitting percentage.
•Tanski is No. 4 on the program's all-time digs list with 1,303. Next on the list is No. 3 Alyse Lahti (1,334).
•Smith, who became the 17th UNH player to record 1,000 career points on Sept. 6, increased her total to 1,110.0 with 22.5 more on Sunday.
•With 10 wins in 13 matches, this marked the second-fastest that UNH reached 10 victories. The 1975 Wildcats accomplished that in 12 matches.
•UNH's 10-4 record is the best start to a season since the 1978 squad was also 10-4 through 14 matches.
UNH vs. NJIT RECAP
SET 1
•UNH reeled off six consecutive points to take early control of the set and match with a 7-2 lead. Smith fueled the run with four kills.
•The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to build a double-digit lead, 15-4. Sullivan had two kills and two blocks to spark that surge.
SET 2
•NJIT took an early 4-1 lead, but the 'Cats stormed back with a 7-1 run to go in front, 8-5. Smith had two service aces and a kill in that spurt.
•The Highlanders rallied to take an 11-10 lead.
•With the score level at 12, UNH won seven consecutive points with Hannah Crist (Cicero, Ind.) tallying three blocks and a kill in that decisive run, which extended to 12-1 and a 24-13 lead.
SET 3
•NJIT remained close until the Wildcats won three consecutive points to open up a seven-point margin, 15-8.
•The Highlanders closed within 15-10, but UNH won five of the next six points to push the margin to 20-11.

•A 4-0 run, bolstered by three kills from Smith, gave UNH a 5-4 lead.
•With the score tied at 10, Towson won the next two points as part of a 6-1 spurt that gave the Tigers a 16-11 advantage.
•The Wildcats inched within 17-14, but the home team won four consecutive points to push the margin to 21-14 and the Wildcat never got closer than five points the rest of the set.

•New Hampshire won five straight points to transform an early three-point deficit into a 7-5 lead.
•Towson answered with a 5-1 run to go back in front, 10-8.
•Another 5-1 spurt by the Tigers extended the margin to 19-14.

•UNH fended off five match points – and held three set points (25-24; 26-25; 29-28) – before finally succumbing on the sixth, 33-31.
