SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Katie Audino (Severn, Md.) and Nelson Thomas (Plainfield, N.J.) of the University of New Hampshire were named to the 2019 America East Helping Hands Team at the conference's annual banquet.
Â
The America East Helping Hands Team is in its sixth year and was established to recognize a male and female student-athlete from each of the nine America East institutions for their exemplary efforts in the area of community service while remaining in good academic standing. This award recognizes student-athletes' dedication to being leaders on and off the field. Each institution, at its discretion, selects a male and female representative to be recognized annually by America East.
Â
Audino, a former co-captain of the 2018 field hockey team, served as SAAC Co-President for two years. In her time with SAAC, Audino helped organize UNH's Soles for Souls shoe drive as well as Hoops for Hunger, Bench Out the Stigma and the Pease Greeters. She was most recently awarded the Cathy Coakley Student-Athlete Community Involvement Award.
Â
Thomas, a red shirt junior on the football team, served as Vice-President of SAAC in 2017 and Co-President, alongside Audino this past year. In 2018, he founded "Bench Out the Stigma" in an effort to destigmatize mental health and aid in positive discussions surrounding the stigma. In 2017, he raised money to donate gift cards to the Dover Children's Home. Thomas has also worked to organize Hoops for Hunger and the Better To9ether games. Â
