Wildcats Announce 2019-20 Freshman Class

DURHAM, N.H. - University of New Hampshire head men's hockey coach Mike Souza has announced the freshman class for the 2019-20 season. Kalle Eriksson (Leksand, Sweden), Robby Griffin (Burlington, Mass.), Lucas Herrmann (Lancaster, N.Y.), Nolan McElhaney (Natick, Mass.) and Chase Stevenson (West Kelowna, British Columbia) will join the program.
"We are very excited to announce our 2019-20 freshman class," said Souza. "With three forwards and two defensemen, this class brings a mixture of size, speed and skill. We are really looking forward to them joining our program."

COACH SOUZA: "We're excited to add Kalle to our program and feel he will add to the overall strength of our D corp especially with his ability to move the puck."

Burlington, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins (NCDC)

COACH SOUZA: "Robby is a strong skater and playmaker and someone we feel has a very big upside."

Lancaster, N.Y./Madison Capitols (USHL)

COACH SOUZA: "Lucas will give us size in the middle of the ice and showed great leadership this season with Madison."

COACH SOUZA: "Nolan is someone who sees the ice well and will add size to our backend. He has showed tremendous will power in battling back from injury."

COACH SOUZA: "Chase plays a 200-foot game and we feel he's someone that can be trusted in all situations."

- Most recently played for the Madison Capitols (USHL) for 39 games of the 2018-19 season where he posted six goals and 17 assists for 23 points
- Also in the 2018-19 season he was a member of the Omaha Lancers (USHL) for 24 games, putting up 13 points on one goal and 12 assists
- Played three seasons for Leksands IF J20 SuperElit team in Sweden
- Team captain in 2017-18
- Tallied nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points over 75 career games
- Attended high school at Leksands Gymanasium and graduated in 2018
Robby Griffin
Forward, 6-0, 185
Burlington, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins (NCDC)
COACH SOUZA: "Robby is a strong skater and playmaker and someone we feel has a very big upside."
BEFORE UNH:
- Played the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons for the Boston Junior Bruins (NCDC) totaling 19 goals and 59 assists for 78 points over 113 games
- Was named a league All-Star in 2018-19 as he played in 58 games with 10 goals and 41 assists for 51 points
- Team won the 2018-19 Dineen Cup championship
- In 55 games played in 2017-18, he recorded nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points
- Was a member of the USA Under-17 Select team as he played in the 5 Nations Tournament in 2017 posting four assists for four points and was named the Player of the Game versus Switzerland
- Two-year member of the Boston Junior Bruins U16 team (2015-16 & 2016-17) and was a two-time league All-Star
- Was a team captain in 2016-17 and posted 21 goals and 59 assists for 80 points over 58 career games
- Attended Burlington High School and graduated in 2019
Lucas Herrmann

- Posted 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points during the 2018-19 season while skating in 53 games for the Madison Capitols (USHL)
- Was an assistant captain
- Tallied four goals and nine assists for 13 points over 17 games for the Topeka RoadRunners (NAHL) during the 2017-18 season
- Also in the 2017-18 season he played for the Odessa Jackalopes (NAHL) where he recorded two goals and 10 assists for 12 points
- Attended the Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y. and graduated in 2018
- Played two years of varsity hockey with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points
Nolan McElhaney
Defenseman, 6-3, 190
Natick, Mass./Omaha Lancers (USHL)
COACH SOUZA: "Nolan is someone who sees the ice well and will add size to our backend. He has showed tremendous will power in battling back from injury."
BEFORE UNH:
- Member of the Omaha Lancers (USHL) for the 2018-19 season playing in seven games as he missed the majority of the year with an injury
- Attended Cushing Academy and graduated in 2018
- Three-year member of the varsity hockey team where he totaled 21 goals and 48 assists for 69 points over 95 games
- Team captain as a senior in 2017-18 and won the team's Defensive Player of the Year Award
- Named to the All-NEPSAC East team in 2017-18
- Played two seasons (2016-17 & 2017-18) for the Eastern Mass. Senators (MHSL) and was a team captain in 2017-18
- Named to the 2017-18 USHS All-USA Hockey third team
Chase Stevenson
Forward, 5-11, 175
West Kelowna, British Columbia/Trail Smoke Eaters (BCHL)
COACH SOUZA: "Chase plays a 200-foot game and we feel he's someone that can be trusted in all situations."
BEFORE UNH:
- Played in the BCHL for four seasons appearing in 133 games with 41 goals and 55 assists for 96 points
- Tallied a combined 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points with the Surrey Eagles and the Trail Smoke Eaters during the 2018-19 season
- Was named the team MVP of the Trail Smoke Eaters with nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points over 32 games
- Played two seasons for the West Kelowna Warriors recording 22 goals and 21 assists for 43 points over 73 games
- Also a member of the Okanagan Rockets where he totaled 78 points over 60 games
- Attended Okanagan Mission Secondary High School and graduated in 2017
