Brekke Leads 'Cats in Season-Ending Loss at No. 1 Maine

BANGOR, Maine – Freshman guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis.) scored 11 points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team in a 69-36 loss to Maine on Wednesday night in an America East tournament quarterfinal game at Cross Insurance Center.
The loss closed out the UNH season. The Wildcats finished with an overall record of 6-24. They were 3-13 and the No. 8 seed for the league tournament.
Maine, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, is 23-7 overall and advances to a semifinal round match against No. 4 seed UAlbany on Sunday in Orono. The Black Bears are the defending tournament champions.
The Wildcats played their 15th game without their leading scorer, junior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine).
Senior forward Tanesha Sutton had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Maine, Junior guard Blanca Millan added 19 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
Brekke was named the America East Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. On Wednesday, she again led the Wildcats in scoring.
She made three of UNH's three-point field goals and was three-for-eight from behind the arc. For the season, Brekkle made a team-high 51 of UNH's 131 shots from behind the arc.
Sophomore Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) had nine points and six rebounds Wednesday night. Junior guard Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) led the team with nine rebounds. Freshman forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) added six points and six rebounds.
Forward Alli Gribbin (Keller, Texas), the team's only senior, finished her career with seven points and five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brekke scored five points in the first period, but Maine led 22-9 when it ended.
The Black Bears had the lead up to 40-20 at the half.
Brekke led UNH with eight points in the first half and Gribbin had six. Brekke and Gribbin each made a pair of three-pointers in the half.
Maine led 52-27 with one period to go on the way to the win.
