FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team will play Tulane University in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The match will be played Dec. 6 (4 p.m.) at Colgate University.
The winner advances to the second round on Dec. 7 (7 p.m.) and will play the winner of the Colgate vs. Boston College match.
UNH, under the leadership of first-year head coach Christopher Feliciano, enters the tournament with a 17-9 overall record. The Wildcats, selected fourth in the America East Coaches' Preseason Poll, finished second in the conference standings with a 7-3 mark.
"It is a true honor to be have been chosen to participate in the NIVC postseason tournament," Feliciano said. "The selection of our program is a testament to the everyday efforts of everyone involved in our program. With this being a transition year, it is a remarkable accomplishment for our 13 outstanding student-athletes to have received this recognition.
"We will use this opportunity to represent UNH on a national level, as we are one of 96 NCAA Division 1 programs left competing in the country," he added.
New Hampshire recorded the most wins through 20 matches in program history with 14 victories. UNH tallied its 10th win in match #13, which marked the second-fastest that the Wildcats reached 10 victories.
The 'Cats are led by America East All-Conference First Team selection Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Second Team honorees Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) and Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.).
Friday's first round match will be the first meeting between the UNH and Tulane (21-10, 10-6 American Athletic Conference) volleyball programs.
Much like the WNIT and NIT events in college basketball, the NIVC taps into the impressive depth of D-I volleyball and is designed to give more high-performing, highly-skilled programs a chance to play for a postseason title.
Powered by Triple Crown Sports, this is the third year of the reborn NIVC event, which originally ran from 1989-1995. Previous champions of the new incarnation of the NIVC are Iowa State (2018) and Ole Miss (2017).
All matches in the NIVC are hosted by participating schools. Rounds 1 & 2 are held Dec. 5-7 at eight sites; Round 3 will take place Dec. 9-12; the semifinals will be held between Dec. 13-15; and the NIVC culminates with the championship game (Dec. 16, 17 or 18).
