Junior Safety Evan Horn Was Honored by STATS and CAA Football
RICHMOND, Va. and CHICAGO – Evan Horn (Lebanon, Pa.), a junior safety on the University of New Hampshire football team, was honored as STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week as well as CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Horn recorded a game- and career-high 11 tackles, including 10 solo stops and a personal-best two sacks, and forced a fumble to help lead UNH to a 28-10 victory Saturday against the University of Maine that brought the Brice-Cowell Musket back to the Wildcats.
His performance led a UNH defense that held Maine to season lows in both points (10) and total yards (313); 61 of those yards came in the last 1:28 of the game with the 'Cats leading 28-10 The Black Bears had entered the game averaging 32.1 points and 400.9 yards per game.
Horn helped reverse momentum to New Hampshire's favor early in the third quarter. After Maine forced the Wildcats to a 3-and-out on the opening possession of the second half, the Black Bears advanced the ball to the UM 42 in four plays. On the next play, however, Horn put an end to Emmanuel Reed's 20-yard gain with a hard tackle that forced a fumble recovered by UNH teammate Niko Kvietkus (Southington, Conn.).
Horn also made an impact on special teams, as his diving effort at the Maine goal line on a UNH punt prevented a touchback and pinned the Black Bears at the Maine 1-yard line; the 'Cats led 14-7 at the time (2:05 remaining in the third quarter).
New Hampshire ended the season with a 6-5 overall record that included a tie for third place in the CAA with a 5-3 conference record.
