Freshman Linebacker Recorded a 55-Yard INT for a Touchdown, Career-High Eight Tackles, and Personal-Best Three Sacks
Oleh Manzyk (Langhorne, Pa.), a freshman linebacker on the University of New Hampshire football team, received three accolades Monday. He received national recognition as the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week, as well as regionally as the New England Football Writers/Grinold Chapter Division I Gold Helmet Award, and on the conference level as CAA Football Rookie of the Week.
Manzyk recorded a career-high eight tackles, including a personal-best three sacks, with five solo stops and three assisted tackles. His 55-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Wildcats a 13-3 lead at 4:07 of the first quarter.
UNH went on to win 26-10 against Elon University on Oct. 5 to extend its win streak to three games and improve to 3-2 overall, 2-0 in the CAA.
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 12 (6 p.m.) at Stony Brook. UNH's next home game is Nov. 2 (1 p.m.) against Villanova University for STEM Day. Group tickets, with options including all-you-can-eat-barbecue seating in the Touchdown Tents at field level, start at $9 and are available by calling 603-862-4000 or going online to www.unhwildcats.com.
Manzyk had three tackles in the first quarter and entered halftime with five stops, including a sack. That quarterback sack was timely; with UNH leading 20-10 late in the second quarter, Elon faced 3rd-and-6 at its 33-yard line and Manzyk stopped the drive with a loss of four yards.
He had two more tackles and another sack in the third quarter. That sack came on the Phoenix's opening drive of the second half and pushed Elon back to the UNH 25, and the visitors missed a 42-yard field goal on the next play.
Manzyk tallied his third sack of the game in the final frame.
