The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.
Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.
Saturday's matchup against No. 11 Villanova will be UNH's third consecutive game against a nationally-ranked team. Next on the schedule is a trip to No. 2 James Madison.
UNH has a 13-11 lifetime record against Villanova with four consecutive wins in the series. New Hampshire has never won five consecutive meetings against VU.
Prior to last year's UNH 34-0 win at Villanova Stadium, these Wildcat football programs had not battled on the gridiron since the 2013 season, which is the last time these teams played in Durham.
New Hampshire has a 16-5 lifetime record at Wildcat Stadium (opened in the 2016 season) and that includes 10-4 against conference opponents. The 'Cats are 3-0 at home this season, and that includes CAA victories against Rhode Island (27-24 on Sept. 21) and Elon (26-10 on Oct. 5).
Since 2008, UNH has a 58-10 home record (.853 win percentage) that includes 39-7 (.848) against CAA teams.
Junior kicker Jason Hughes has made five consecutive field goal attempts and 12 of 15 this year; the 12 field goals marks the highest total by a UNH squad since the 2013 Wildcats made 15 of 20 attempts.
Hughes has 10 makes the past five games with five longer than 40 yards, and that includes a personal best of 45 yards three times.
UNH's defense has climbed into the top 10 in scoring defense (124 ranked) at No. 7 by allowing a mere 16.1 points per game. Boosted by four interceptions vs. Elon, the Wildcats are No. 12 in interceptions (10).
New Hampshire is the CAA leader in scoring defense (16.1 points per game) and passing efficiency defense (110.99). The Wildcats rank second in total defense (347.7 yards/game) and passing defense (191.6 yards/game), as well as No. 3 in opponent third-down conversion (35.1%).
