UNH Places Third in Commissioner's Cup
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kate Haslett (Rothesay, New Brunswick) and Nick Marino (Hudson, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire were named to the 2018 America East Helping Hands Team at the conference's annual banquet that was held Tuesday night at the Andaz Hotel. Marino is a repeat honoree from the 2017 Helping Hands Team.
The America East Helping Hands Team is in its fifth year and was established to recognize a male and female student-athlete from each of the nine America East institutions for their exemplary efforts in the area of community service while remaining in good academic standing. This award recognizes student-athletes' dedication to being leaders on and off the field. Each institution, at its discretion, selects a male and female representative to be recognized annually by America East.
Haslett, a senior captain on the 2017-18 UNH women's ice hockey team, and Marino, a senior on the 2017 UNH football team, were also bestowed the Community Involvement Award at the University of New Hampshire athletic department's annual Senior Student-Athlete Appreciation Banquet this past May.
America East also announced the final standings of the 2017-18 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioners Cup with UNH placing third. The Wildcats' accumulated 280 points on the strength of championships in both women's cross country and women's swimming and diving, as well as runner-up finishes in field hockey and women's outdoor track & field, and a women's soccer regular-season title. The University at Albany (411) and Stony Brook University (333) finished ahead of the Wildcats.
Haslett never missed an opportunity to volunteer when the opportunity presented itself – either with the women's hockey team or Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She volunteered at Try Hockey for a Day, the Portsmouth 5K Breast Cancer run, Best Buddies events on campus, St. Thomas More parish yard sale, and read to elementary school students. Haslett also participated in food drives, toiletry collection for Pease Military Base Airport, and the You Can Play initiative. She was also a student leader for the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship group and volunteered at various conferences, including the NH STEM Seacoast Conference and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Conference.
Haslett is a two-time inductee into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Collegiate Honor Society. She has made the Hockey East All-Academic Team every year and also made the league's All-Academic All-Star Team last year. She earned a Civil Engineering degree with a 3.94 GPA and thus far as a grad student has a 4.0. She traveled to India to present a paper for her grad program in the Fall 2017 semester.
Haslett came to the UNH women's ice hockey program as a defenseman but transitioned to forward midway through her Wildcat career, played in all 36 games as a senior in the 2017-18 season and recorded seven points on three goals and four assists. She overcame a season-ending injury just three games into her first year at UNH (2013-14) to become a two-time captain.
At the senior banquet in May, Haslett was also presented the Tina True Memorial Award in recognition of her commitment to strength and conditioning. And at the women's hockey team banquet, she was given the Dr. Edgar Academic Award.
Marino was outstanding with regards to out-reach and community service. With the football team, he was involved with Read Across America and Be the Match bone marrow drive. Marino was also involved with SAAC and Intervarsity initiatives, including spring break trips to southern states to help build/rebuild homes. He also organized and ran the team's Hoops for Hunger fundraiser for Cornucopia Food Pantry as well as the monthly food collection benefitting the St. Thomas More food pantry and Soles 4 Souls shoe collection. Furthermore, Marino was a proponent of the YOU CAN PLAY and Spread Respect events, as well as the White Ribbon/Antiviolence campaigns.
Marino was named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Division I Football Second Team for his combined athletic and academic performance. He was also feted as a member of the National Football Foundation Hampshire Society for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher throughout his collegiate career.
The senior safety earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating summa cum laude (3.86 GPA) in December 2016. Marino, a University Honors Program Presidential Scholar, has compiled a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student studying for a master's degree in mechanical engineering with a concentration in fluid dynamics.
In the 2017 season, Marino saw action in all 14 games, recorded nine tackles and an interception, which he returned 33 yards in a win against Bryant University on Sept. 30. The three-time member of the CAA Academic All-Conference Team and CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honors Society, and he was co-president of SAAC.
