Smith's 15 Kills, 16 Digs Lead 'Cats to 3-1 Win at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a match-high 15 kills and 16 digs to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to Sunday afternoon's 3-1 victory against Binghamton University at West Gym.
The set scores were 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20. UNH improves to 8-11 overall and 4-1 in America East. Binghamton is now 4-13, 2-2.
Smith recorded her second double-double of the weekend and ninth of the season. She tallied 15 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) matched her season high of 14 kills on a .345 hitting percentage.
The combination of Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.; 23 assists) and Mali Jereczek (Green Bay, Wis.; 16 assists) guided the Wildcats to a .253 hitting percentage.
Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) recorded a team-high 21 digs. Gabri Olhhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and Maddie Wiedenfield (Omaha, Neb.) helped limit the Bearcats to a .151 hitting percentage with five and four blocks, respectively.
Binghamton was led by Gaby Alicea (13 kills), Samantha Gioiosa (25 digs) and Kiara Adams (31 assists).

SET 1
- There were four ties and two lead changes in the first set. UNH held Binghamton to a negative hitting percentage (-.029).
- New Hampshire won the first two points of the match, but the home team responded with a 3-0 run to take lead.
- Trailing 8-6, UNH reeled off five consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead. The run included kills by Molly Wotton (Dover, N.H.) and Smith, a Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.) service ace and block by Alexa Markman (Chicago, Ill.).
- Leading 15-13, the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to extend the advantage to 22-14. The run included two Petke kills and one Jereczek ace.
- Back-to-back kills by Petke and Smith gave UNH set point, 24-15, and one point later Petke tallied another kill to end Set 1.
SET 2
- There were five ties and two lead changes in the second set, which saw the Bearcats record a .400 hitting percentage.
- UNH took an early 4-2 lead and held a 6-5 advantage before the home team won five consecutive points to fuel a 7-1 run that gave Binghamton a 12-7 lead.
- Leading 17-14, the Bearcats won four consecutive points to pull away.
- The Wildcats closed within 23-19, but a service error and block by the home 'Cats closed out Set 2 and leveled the match at one set apiece.
SET 3
- There were also five ties and two lead changes in the third set, which saw New Hampshire hit at a .297 clip and Binghamton at .133.
- UNH raced out to a 3-0 lead but the Bearcats responded to take a 5-4 advantage.
- The teams exchanged points to advance the score to 8-7 in favor of Binghamton, but then two kills by Petke and another by Smith sparked a 4-0 run and 9-1 spurt overall that gave the Wildcats a 16-9 lead. The five-point spurt included two kills and a block by Olhava.
- Holding a 20-15 lead, UNH won five of the next six points to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
SET 4
- There was just one tie and one lead change in the fourth set as UNH hit .324 in comparison to the home team's .103.
- Binghamton took the first point but the Wildcats won the next five to take a lead they would not relinquish.
- The teams traded points to push the score to 12-10 in favor of New Hampshire. Olhava and Petke combined on a block to ignite a 4-0 run that extended the cushion to 16-10.
- The Bearcats inched within 17-13, but kills by Smith and Wiedenfeld helped push the lead to 20-13.
- Binghamton answered with four consecutive points, however, to trim the deficit to 20-17.
- UNH recorded back-to-back blocks to stymie the comeback and give the Wildcats a 22-17 advantage.
- The teams exchanged points the rest of the way to end the match.
