Smith Tallies 19 Kills, 20 Digs in 3-1 Loss at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a match-high 19 kills and personal-best 20 digs but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Stony Brook University at Pritchard Gymnasium on Friday night. The set scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.
Smith recorded 19 kills and only three errors on 45 attacks for a .356 hitting percentage. Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.) recorded a career-high 51 assists to direct UNH to a .193 team hitting percentage. Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.), the reigning America East Defensive Specialist of the Week, equaled her career high with a match-high 35 digs.
SBU was led by Emily Costello (15 kills, 17 digs, four blocks) and Leanne Sakowicz (43 assists, 16 digs).
UNH is now 9-13 overall and 5-3 in America East. Stony Brook won its 11th consecutive match to improve to 15-8, 8-0.

THE DIFFERENCE
* Stony Brook overcame late deficits in both the third and fourth sets to record the victory.
* With the match tied at one set apiece, UNH built a 16-8 advantage en route to a 22-17 lead. Stony Brook reeled off seven consecutive points, however, and captured Set 3, 25-23, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
* In Set 4, the Wildcats led 18-14 before the home team reeled off five consecutive points to take a 19-14 lead. With the score tied at 20, SBU won three straight points to edge in front, 23-20, and the Seawolves closed out the set and match on a kill by Costello.
SET 1
* There were nine ties and three lead changes in the first set.
* UNH broke an 11-11 tie with four consecutive points, including kills by Smith and Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and an ace by Tanski, to build a 15-11 lead that would not be relinquished.
* SBU closed within 16-15, but a kill and ace by Smith sparked another 4-0 run that extended the advantage to 20-15.
* The Seawolves never got closer than four points the rest of the way and New Hampshire closed out the set on a block by Patlovich, SBU attack error and kill from Hannah Petke (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.).
SET 2
* There were no ties or lead changes in the second set as Stony Brook won the first two points and built an early 6-2 lead.
* UNH closed within 10-8 on a combined block by Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.) and Molly Wotton (Dover, N.H.), but the Seawolves respond with three consecutive points to surge ahead 13-8.
* Trailing 22-17 out of their last timeout, the Wildcats inched closer on back-to-back kills by Wiedenfeld but SBU answered with two straight points and then closed out the set.
SET 3
* There were five ties and three lead changes in the third set.
* It was back-and-forth early in Set 4 with ties at 2, 3, 5 and 6.
* New Hampshire surged ahead, 12-6, on a 6-0 run fueled by a pair of Olhava kills and two aces from Jenny Weston (Canton, Mass.).
* Stony Brook called its second timeout of the set at 15-8.
* Trailing 22-17, the Seawolves went on a 7-0 run to move within set point at 24-22. A kill by Wotton prolonged the set, but only by one point as Maria Poole then recorded a kill to give SBU a 2-1 lead in the match.
SET 4
* There were eight ties and three lead changes in the fourth set.
* Undeterred by SBU's third-set rally, the Wildcats opened Set 4 on a 3-0 run.
* Trailing 7-4, the Seawolves went on a 4-0 spurt to take an 8-7 lead.
* The teams exchanged points to advance the score to 11, then the 'Cats won 5 of 6 points to build a 16-12 advantage.
* Stony Brook trailed 18-14 before regaining a 19-18 lead. UNH called a timeout and tied the score at 19 and 20, but then the home team won back-to-back points to inch in front 22-20 and prompt UNH's second timeout.
* SBU won the next point, but the 'Cats closed within 23-22 on a kill by Olhava followed by a Seawolves' attack error.
* Stony Brook called the last timeout of the set and won the next point to close within match point. the Wildcats extended the match on Smith's 19 kill of the match, but Costello's kill ended the set and match.
