DURHAM, N.H. - UNH Athletics is proud to announce a new endowed fund, the Linda K. Hall '62 Women's Alpine Fund. The fund was established in memory of Linda Hall '62, by her brother and sister-in-law, Marty '60 and Kathy '66 Hall.
An excerpt from the Fall 2016 edition of the Cat Tracker...
Marty Hall '60 and his younger sister Linda grew up in vibrant Gilford, N.H., in the 1940s and 50s. They were part of a rag-tag team of friends who would ski home down the back side of Gunstock Mountain. They spent their days picking blueberries, played football every afternoon behind the Community Church, and hiked and biked everywhere they could.
Â
Linda managed to keep up, Marty recalls, because she was a tomboy and loved to get into things. The two of them once commandeered a hay wagon to take down a steep hill, and built ski jumps behind The Gilford Village Store.
Â
"We were just big buds, from our childhood on," says Marty. "We never got into any trouble, but we ran all over the place."
Â
Linda was a varsity skier and field hockey player at UNH. She graduated in 1962 and went on to become a teacher, ski coach and eventually a leading expert in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. She worked at several hospitals, and wrote and edited the national guidelines for cardiac rehab in 1989 and 1994.
Â
For all the things that Linda Hall accomplished in her life, however, she simply ran out of time to accomplish one of the last things she wanted to do. She had long wanted to set up a fund at UNH to support student-athletes, says Marty, but she died in February 2016 after a brief illness. That's why Marty and his wife, Kathy '66, picked up where Linda left off, and in March established the Linda K. Hall '62 Women's Alpine Fund.
Â
"Linda and I both felt that we left here with all the tools we needed for our professional lives. We both felt very beholden to the school, and we talked about that quite a bit," says Marty.
Â
Kathy Hall agrees.
Â
"For all of us, our time here really formulated our lives. When I see people come back for my reunions, I see how varied our careers and our lives became, but the majority of people will tell you that it was this particular place that gave them the tools to succeed," she says.
Â
The fund will support the UNH women's alpine ski team, providing scholarships and equipment for team members and meeting other expenses as needed. For the Halls, honoring one of Linda's passions was
important. Kathy says that, in Linda's era, the team received very little recognition; there aren't photos or articles chronicling their success. There were just four women on the roster, and while the men's team had six or eight races each season, the women's team typically had only two or three. But the team's success was a big part of Linda's life and legacy.
Â
When it came time to make a gift in Linda's name, "There were no questions it was going to go to UNH," Marty says, noting that the school and its programs meant a great deal to his sister. "This is all about her and honoring her memory."
