Wildcats Complete Weekend Sweep of Maine with 4-3 Win

ORONO, Maine -- The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the University of Maine with a 4-3 win at Alfond Arena Saturday night.

WHAT HAPPENED
The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead at the 13:22 mark of the first period on a power play goal by Rob Michel. Nolan Vesey assisted Michel on the play as he sent a pass to Michel a the point. He then fired a shot through traffic that found its way into the back of the net.
Senior forward Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) got the 'Cats on the board at 18:22 of the first with a goal during 5-on-3 play after a pair of Maine penalties. The play started with freshman Patrick Grasso (Ankeny, Iowa) playing a pass to junior Michael McNicholas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) behind the Maine net. McNicholas fed the puck to Kelleher in the slot who found the top corner of the net with his shot for his 11th goal of the season.
On the ensuing 5-on-4 advantage for UNH, freshman Liam Blackburn (Prince George, British Columbia) scored his fifth goal of the season to put UNH up 2-1 with 55 seconds remaining in the first period. Sophomore Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.) played a pass to classmate Marcus Vela (Burnaby, British Columbia) behind the net to the right of Maine netminder Rob McGovern. Vela played a pass to Blackburn who snuck his shot in between the post and McGovern's right leg.
Blackburn tallied his second goal of the night on a power pay at 16:29 of the second period for his sixth of the season. Senior captain Matias Cleland (Longmont, Colo.) sent a pass to Kelleher at the top of the slot. Kelleher played a pass down low to Blackburn who then fired a shot that rung the post and went into the net.
At 3:38 of the third period, the Black Bears came to within one with a goal by Cam Brown. Brendan Robbins and Blaine Byron tallied assists on the play. The Wildcats regained a two-goal lead at 17:07 of the third as Kelleher scored his second goal of the night. Kelleher picked up a loose puck in the UNH zone and skated all the way into the Maine zone with it. He fired a shot that went through the legs of a defenseman and McGovern and into the net.
Maine cut the deficit again with 25 seconds remaining in the third period with an extra attacker goal by Chase Pearson. Mitchell Fossier and Brown recorded assists on the play.
